recordedhistoryofabout552years.Theyalsohavespecialculture.Thegeneralfacts,pasthistory,andcultureall
effectthewaysofthiscountry.
ThecountryofHaitiislocatedintheCaribbeanSea,whichisjustsouthoftheGulfofMexico.TheCaribbean
Seaishometoalotoftheworldsisland.ThecapitalisPortauPrince,whichislocatedinthemiddleofthecountry
rightnexttoGolfedelaGonave.Thewholecountyisabout10,700squaremiles.Itcontainsanestimated6,867,995
people,thisisabout642peoplepersquaremile.ThisisactuallyquitedenseconsideringthattheUnitedStateshas
about76peoplepersquaremile.
ThecountryofHaiticultureisverymuchliketheFrench.InfactHaitiistheonlyLatinAmericancountrywhere
thecultureisFrench.ThefirstlanguageisFrench,butanothercommonlanguagethatisspokenthereisCreole.
ManyofthepeoplespeakCreolebecausetheFrenchsettlersintroducedit.CreoleisamixofFrenchandthenative
languagethatwasspokenontheisland.NinetyfivepercentofthepeopleofHaiticomefromanAfricandecent.The
religionconsistsofeightypercentRomanCatholic,sixteenpercentProtestant,andninetyfivepercentVoodoo.
Betweentheyearsof1492tothepresentdayalotofhistoricaleventshaveoccurred.Thefirsttimethecountry
ofHaitifellunderEuropeanrulewaswhenChristopherColumbusfirstsetfootonitputtingitundertheruleofthe
Spanish.Thenafter,manyrevolts,in1804Haitisuccessfullybecameanindependentcountrybypassingalaw
statingitsfreedom.ItwasverymuchlikewhentheUnitedStatesofAmericadeclareditsindependencefromGreat
BritainwiththeDeclarationofIndependence.From19151934USMarinesoccupiedthecountry.Thisresultedinthe
populationtogoupwhichalsomadethecountrymoredense.In1949thedemocraticrulewasturnedintoa
dictatorship.Thenin1991therewasthefirstelectedchiefbroughtintooffice.HisnamewasJeanBertrandAristide
hewon67%ofthevotes.ThenhisclosefriendandformerPrimeMinisterRenPrevalsucceededhimin1995.
ThecountryofHaitiisconsideredtobeaCaribbeanIslandthoughinmanywaysitdiffersfrommanyother
countriesinthearea.ThecultureismainlyFrenchduetotheearlyfindingsbytheEuropeans.Thisthencausedthe
peoplelivingtheretospeakupanddeclareitselfanindependentcountry,whileothercountriesownmanyofthe
islandsinCaribbean.Thereligionisverydifferentduetothefactthatitismostlymadeupofpeoplewhopractice
thereligionofVoodoo.Whenallofthelocation,cultureandpasthistorycomeintoplayitcomesouttobeavery
uniquecountry.
