Taming Of the Shrew
William Shakespeare is a famous and excellent playwright. He wrote tragedies, and
comedies one comedy being, The Taming of the Shrew. Towards the end of the play there is a
scene (A Public Road, Act IV Scene V) that is humorous. In fact there are lots of humorous
scenes but this is my favorite. This scene appeals to me because of the humor and conflict when
they meet the real Vincentio
This scene starts out when they are about to leave to go to Biancas wedding, and he is
trying to get Kate to agree with everything he says including what time it is and whether the sun
or moon is up. Kate finally agrees with him and they leave but they stop to take a break on the
road, and Petruchio says that the moon is up but at first Kate protests then he says we will go
back home and wait for the moon to rise to go to my fathers house, she then agrees and he tells
her that she is crazy and it is the sun that is up. Vincentio then walks up and Petruchio say to
Kate look at this young lady and she agrees right away and described him as a young budding
virgin. Petruchio then tells her that she is mistaken and it is really an old withered man and Kate
say well forgive me for it must have been the glare of the sun. This scene is honestly better seen
then read but it humors me because if you watch it Vincentio is giving them the weirdest look.
Kate being shrewish it creates more conflict than anything in this story. With everything
Petruchio say Kate says otherwise no matter what it is she always protests. Another conflict is
that they both describe Vincentio as a young woman instead of an old man which he really is.

The last conflict is that Petruchio tries to tell Vincentio that his son Lucentio is married to Bianca
Kates sister, but he doesnt believe them for two reasons because well after all they just talked
about him as a young lady which made him think they were crazy, and his son Lucentio is
supposed to be in Padua for school not to get married to some girl. When he gets to Padua finally
he gets a rude awakening that causes this huge commotion in the street.
This scene is humorous and conflicting because of all the confusion and Kates hardheadedness. Some people dont find other peoples confusion funny but I personally think its
humorous. William Shakespeare does a great job showing humor in this scene and in many other
scenes throughout the play.
