Dear, 23 Parent Tips and Extended Activities The grocery store is a great place to practice phonics! As you place items in your cart or on the checkout counter, ask your child to identify the sounds and letters of each item. Encourage your child to keep a notebook or piece of paper for recording special kinds of words. For example, your child can record words beginning with a given letter, words that contain given vowel teams, or words that rhyme. Writing letters to friends or family members is great practice for young learners. Help them write a short note or a letter to someone—even their teacher. Open a closet or toy chest with your child. Choose an item, tell your child the first letter of the item you are thinking of, and ask her to guess what it is. If she guesses correctly, congratulate her and give her the item. Your child may also enjoy switching roles. When you read to your child, show him that a book begins at the front page and goes to the back, that the words start at the top and go to the bottom, and that the words go from left to tight on each line. This is important information for your budding reader. As you read, you can move your finger along to show the words you are reading. When you have finished reading a story to your child, ask her to retell it to you. Prompt her with questions, if necessary, until she has completed the whole narrative. Encourage your child to use the Number-Letter Code to write you a secret message. You can write one back. 24 Be crc a / me oN koe ee eee er rere Peet areca Sata cece :
