What I noticed

Students were first brought to the carpet for whole group

learning.
Students read as a group in their books about Martin Luther King
Jr.
They were given a model chart about copy in their daybooks to
talk about a main event in Martin Luther Kings life

Main Event

Happened After

Civil Rights Act

Students read in their books about Martin Luther King Jr. and the
Civil Rights Act. By reading in their books they found the things
that happened before and after the main event and filled in the
chart (Students and teacher filled in chart as a group).
Students then did independent work, where they did the same
chart and read a story about Clara Barton.

American Red Cross

Students read about Clara Barton and the American Red Cross
Students filled in the chart.
Students had to use sentences from the story to fill in their chart.

Thoughts, Questions, Connections to Methods Classes

I really liked this lesson and how the students had to read and
understand the text to be able to fill in the chart.
I liked how there was a whole group part to model for the
students, then an independent part where the student did the
same activity on their own.
The students seemed to stay focused and engaged in the activity
during whole group.
Some students had a hard time with independent practice and
did not know where to look in the story to fill in the chart.
Overall I think the lesson went well and the students learned a
lot of about historical people through reading and writing.
As an assessment the teacher walked around during independent
practice and assisted students. When students were finished
they checked with the teacher and had to have the correct
answers in the chart, from the book.
