The peridontal probe: Periodontal evaluation is

critical in the early diagnosis and effective management of periodontal
diseases. Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, 8(9): 50-52, 54.

Periodontal disease can be present without the clinical signs of gingival

inflammation. This is why periodontal probing is so important in the dental
hygiene appointment. The results of periodontal probing, along with the patient's
medical and dental history, are critical in determining a treatment plan for the
patient. This procedure can be a determining factor in the severity of periodontal
disease and is a very critical part of a periodontal examination.
Periodontal readings are recorded on six surfaces of each individual tooth.
The clinician inserts the probe slightly mesial of the distal line angle on posterior
teeth and at the midline on anterior teeth. Probing requires a walking stroke. You
use a pivot and role motion to ensure that the probe stays at the correct angle.
Periodontal recordings should be done at maintenance appointments to compare
previous readings.
Periodontal probing is an important part of a routine dental hygiene
appointment. The information in this article helped reaffirm the importance and
technique of the procedure.
