Aadrvark-Copper Sunset (1:00) from self-titled LP 1970.

British 4-piece oddly

with no guitarist, just a heavily distorted Hammond playing lead. Members
went on to join Free (of All Right Now fame) and Bad Company (of Bad
Company fame). This is their only release.
Lucifers Friend- Ride the Sky (5:45) from self-titled LP 1970. German 5-piece
featuring singer John Lawton, future member of Uriah Heep. The postSabbath effect is clearly audible as all of the principal elements of heavy
metal are in use.
Leaf Hound-Freelance Fiend (10:17) from Growers of Mushroom 1971. British
5-piece featuring Peter French, eventual vocalist of both Cactus and Atomic
Rooster. This was this bands only release until French released Unleashed
35 years later with a new lineup of young dudes who were likely not alive
when this band was formed.
Possessed-Thunder and Lightning (15:46) from Exploration LP 1971. British 4piece which included singer/guitarists Vernon Pereira and Mick Reeves who
were members of Band of Joy, the group that produced Robert Plant. Reeves
was a member of the earliest incarnation of Judas Priest. Possessed was
supposedly on the verge of success some years later before they died when
their tour van struck a gas tank. If you ask me, the verge-of-success
component that usually goes along with these tragic tales where unknown
artists are concerned often just makes for a better story.
Supersister-She Was Naked (19:51) from Present from Nancy. Dutch 4-piece
who released eight progressive rock albums in the little more than three
years they existed. Keyboardist Robert Jan Stips later joined Golden Earring
(Coke commercial at 14:16) who had that shitty radio hit Radar Love in the
70s and Twilight Zone in the 80s.
Utopia-Whos this Man (25:10) from self-titled 1970. American 4-piece (not
the Todd Rundgren outfit). Utopia soon after this release changed their name
to Growl and signed to Frank Zappas (10:02) DiscReet Records.
Rotomagus-Fightin Cock (29:09) from The Sky Turns Red/Fightin Cock EP
1971. French 3-piece who were dropped as a 5-piece from CBS records the
year prior. Rotomagus whittled themselves down to a skeleton crew then
released this disc so raw and ahead of its time that its near anachronistic in
its foresight.
Warpig-Rockstar (33:43) from the Warpig LP 1970. Canadian 5-piece, widely
ignored in their day who are now championed as metal pioneers. Deep Purple
blatantly plagiarized this song with Fireball (51:39)
Sex-I Had to Rape Her (38:03) from self-titled LP 1970. French-Canadian 3-

piece with sex-related themes and lyrics. Despite the deplorable sentiment
(which I think is intended to be apologal) this is one of the coolest rock riffs
ever written.
Masters Apprentices-Rio de Camero (40:49) from Choice Cuts LP 1971.
Australian 4-piece who were pop icons even writing a song for a car
commercial (5:22). They were known to conform to popular styles as trends
changed which was easy for them to get away with in the isolated Australian
market. After surf then pop then a psychedelic stint, The Apprentices were
experimenting with a heavier rock sound in 1971.
Osanna-Non sei vissuto mai (Have You Never Lived) (45:19) from Luomo LP
1971. Italian 5-piece composed of art school students who are considered the
cornerstone of the Italian progressive rock movement. Its been suggested
that Genesis Peter Gabriel kiped his face paint and tunic from Osanna front
man Lino Vairetti after Genesis toured Italy in 1972 with Osanna supporting.
November-Ganska Lngt Frn Sergel (Quite Far From Sergel) (52:07) 1971.
Swedish 3-piece who are considered Swedens first hard rock act.
Legendarily, November sang in English when they toured the UK in 1971,
their lyrics were so drenched in cliched hippie sentiment that crowds would
demand they sing in their native Swedish.
Cactus-Rumbling Man (57:17) outtake from self-titled 1970. American 4-piece
composed of members of Vanilla Fudge (56:24) with Ted Nugents Amboy
Dukes singer Rusty Day.
Haze-Fast Career (62:51) from Hazecolor Dia LP 1971. German 5-piece who
produced one bizarre (even for a 1971 Krautrock release) album. Critics seem
to take issue with Christian Scherlers over-the-top vocals. No member of
Haze appears to have done anything prior or since.
Haystacks Balboa-The Children of Heaven (73:00) from self-titled LP 1970.
American 5-piece with likely the toughest employment of the harpsichord in
the history of music. This is their one and only album.
