These tales were written wn Sanskrit by
Somarova Pandit; they were collected and
compiled about A. DB, 1059, for the amuse-
ment of the grand-roth.. of Harsha Deva,
king of Kashmir.
They relate va the birth and wonderful me-
mory of Vararuch:- -the fouridation of Patali-
putra, now Patna-—Vurarvchi’s dispute with
: Panini the great graramarian—the rich mer-
chant--the punishment of pride—the his-
tory of king Salivaban—Shridatta’s adven-
tures—Vikramadityea,—a king’s punishment
for not knowing Shandhi—a tale of Tamluk.
These tales refer to characters famous i in
Indian History 18, centuries ago—at a time
when Buddhism was powerful in various
