Teacher Candidate: Amy Willey

Name of Lesson: Thanksgiving Celebration

Subject: Language Arts

Grade: Special Education Preschool

Rationale for lesson: It is the week before Thanksgiving, so this will give the children a fun
activity to do to get ready for the event. It will also be a keepsake for the parents.
Learning outcomes (objectives) of lesson: The goal for this lesson is for the children to use
sensory skills by using their fingers in paint, learn about turkeys, and listening skills during the
story.
Assessment of student outcomes: The outcome will be measured by the children mimicking
their peers when I trace their hands and help them put their paint on their fingers and paper. I
would also ask the children to make the gobble gobble sound while singing Old MacDonald.
Related Foundations: ELA.5.2 Intentionally make marks in substances.
Materials needed: Paper
Marker
Red paint
Lesson Presentation:
Anticipatory Set: Old MacDonald had a farm. EIEIO. And on the farm he had a
turkey, etc.

Teaching procedures: I will read the children the Turkey Day book and then we will sit at the
table and I will trace each childs hands. I will then put red paint on their thumbs and make the
turkey gobbler.
Guided and independent practice: This activity will require guided practice because the
children will need extra assistance based on their age. I will use the hand-over-hand technique
with each child to complete the project.
Closure: I will have the children put their papers on the counter so they can dry and I
will ask a few of the older ones what the turkey says.
Differentiated instruction: Some of the children may not need as much assistance with the paint
and coloring the turkey as a few of the smaller ones.
Multicultural emphasis: There are none with this lesson.
Technology: There is no technology needed for this lesson.
Reflection on lesson: The children enjoyed this activity, even though some of them did not
understand what they were doing. They were all able to meet the foundation I wanted them to,
which was to make marks in substances.
