Think-Pair-Share Activity: What do you

know about genetically modified foods
and/or other organisms?

Formative

Summative

Discussion about genetically modified foods

and what we know.
Video Answer Sheet: Students respond to Bill
Nye's video on genetically modified organisms
(GMOs) and pull the information together to
come to own conclusion about labeling GMOs
and use of GMOs in food.
WebQuest: Students complete a WebQuest
where they gather information about genetic
engineering, its applications and foods that are
currently genetically modified. The teacher can
assess students' progress towards
understanding genetic engineering and its
applications.
Quiz: Covers how GMOs are made and some
reasons why GMOs have been created and used
(see notes).
Mid-Research Report: Students must check in to
continue their research and verify valid
websites. Checks for understanding about the
use and creation of GMOs should be made
here.
Research Proposal: Check for understanding of
purpose (to support or reject use of GM corn in
a town in Mexico). Also, check for
understanding of the technology (PowerPoint,
Prezi, Word) depending on the group's choice
of presentation.
Presentation: Students present
their view and argument on the use
of GMOs and whether or not the
town should buy and sow GM corn.
Final Discussion: Students use what
they have learned from other
students and wrap up the unit with
a whole class discussion about what
they learned from other groups, if
and why their opinions changed,
and how what they have learned
will affect the choices they make as
consumers.
