Grade: Kindergarten
Subject: Science
Duration: 30 minutes
Materials:

Kindergarten (January 2015) Science Spin Penguin Dos and Donts


SMART board

Prep work:

Create SMART board document.


o Type do and dont at the top of the page.
o Separate the words by drawing a t-table
o Search for penguin related items in picture clips or internet to place at
the bottom of the document.
Review the lyrics of the Hokey Pokey; this tune will be used for the Penguin
Shuffle.
o Penguin Shuffle lyrics
You put your right wing in, you put your right wing out, you put your
right wing in, and you shake it all about. You do the penguin shuffle
and you turn it all around, thats what its all about.
(Repeat with left wing, webbed foot- right and left, beak, and
whole self- take a penguin dive)

Objectives:

Students will listen to information about the penguin. (CCSS.ELALiteracy.SL.K.1.a)


Students will be able to recall on what they learned by participating in the
SMART board activity. (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.2)
Students will be able to act like penguins during the Penguin Shuffle.

Standards:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.2 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or


information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering
questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not
understood.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1.a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g.,
listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under
discussion).

19.B.1a Understand spatial awareness and relationships to objects and


people.

Procedures:
1. Teacher will read science spin to students.
2. Teacher will explain SMART board activity and explain the pictures on the
board.
3. Teacher will call on students to drag pictures to the do or dont side one
at a time.
4. Once all the pictures are placed, teacher will ask students if they can think of
any other things that penguins can or cant do, or what they do or dont have.
5. Teacher will write additional responses on the board.
6. Once the activity has concluded, and if theres time, teacher will create a
circle with the students and lead the Penguin Shuffle.
7. Once all activities have ended, students will gather and sit in their spots on
the carpet.

Modifications:

Fidgety students will be able to get up and move around during the SMART
board activity, and during the Penguin Shuffle.
