Unit Lesson 2

Math/1st grade

03/05/15

Learning Objective: Students will be able to define different attributes of

shapes, and create shapes based off given directions or clues with 90%
accuracy.
Alignment with Standards:

1.G.1 Distinguish between defining attributes versus non-defining attributes;

build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

Developmental Appropriateness or cross-curricular connections: The

learning objective is appropriate because students have learned shapes in
previous grades. Students will need the knowledge of geometry outside of
the classroom. Shapes are all around and can be used in many professions.
By studying shapes students will be recognize items that surround them.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to
define different
attributes of shapes,
and create shapes
based off given
directions or clues with
90% accuracy.

Assessment(s) of the
Objective(s)
Pre: Students will
review shapes, the sides
and corners of shape
and name as they are
placed on the smart
bored or pointed out
around the room.
During: Students will
be given directions
based on what shapes
to draw. They will be
given the vertices, sizes
and sides. Students
must listen to the
directions and draw the
picture based on the
instructions given.
Post: Students will turn
in the completed project
and be given a point for

Use of Formative
Assessment
I will use the
information from this
lesson to see if students
are ready to move on.
The lesson will be
observed to see if the
student fully understand
the idea of a composite
shape. Students will
also be assessed on
their quality of picture
and creative ability.

correctly based off of
directions that were
given.
Accommodations: To accommodate students there will be differentiated
instruction. Given an example of the finished product. Practice with drawing
and extended time will be given if needed. Directions will be written as well
as read aloud multiple times.
Materials:

Pencils
Crayons
Word Wall

Give the entire group a piece of vanilla paper

Then begin to give directions on drawing the shapes
a. This shapes has 6 sides place it where it will be most helpful
b. This shapes has 4 vertices and four sides 2 sides are equal
c. This shapes has 3 vertices
d. This shape has four equal sides
e. This shapes has 0 sides and 0 vertices
At this time allow students time to draw their picture using those
shapes
Ask student to write about the shapes their used.
Ask them to count up the total number of sides and vertices used
Take up the work and grade it

Activity Analysis:
1. The activity where the teacher gives the direction allowed while writing
on the smart board is a great activity. This activity can be used to see
how well students listen. The student have to listen to get the correct
shapes. By using the smart board technology will be used in this
lesson. The student will like this because it is based on information
they know, but will still be challenging as well. They will really have to
use their brains. When the students take the shapes and create their
own pictures. This allows their students to be creative in their thinking
and drawings.

2. The student writing will be like a review for them. Often the students
listen to the teacher give out facts, but this time they have to write the
information for themselves. This will cause them to add, and know
what a side and a vertices is. This is a great review, but there is no
technology used. There is none used because it is not needed for this
portion of the lesson.
