Cuba and the friendship with


Castro

In 1958, after a period in


London, Garcia Marquez
came back to America,
setting up home in
Venezuela. After Fidel
Castros landslide victory,
he visited Cuba, where he
met Che Guevara, and
worked for the agency
Prensa Latina, founded by
Castro. His friendship with
the lder maximo- that he
defined as intellectual and
literary more than politicaldidnt prevent him from
being highly esteemed even
by the ex-president of
United States, Bill Clinton,
who declared that Marquez
was his favourite writer.

Marquez and US
Government

In 1961 he moved to
New York, as
correspondent for Prensa
Latina. Feeling under
surveillance by the CIA
and threated by Cuban
Anticastrist exiles, he
decided to transfer to
Mexico, after he lost
permanent residency in
the USA as a journalist,
due to his political views.
