Student Teacher: Ryan Walsh
School: Princeton High School
Date: 4/15/15
Period/Time: Period 7, 8
Grade: Pre-Calculus
Subject/Topic/Activity: 4.6 Exponential Growth
1. Standards:
For exponential models, express as a logarithm the solution to abct = d where a, c, and dare numbers
and the base b is 2, 10, or e; evaluate the logarithm using technology.
2. Objectives:
SWBAT construct exponential functions to represent population growth
3. Materials:
Projector, YouTube, White Board, Markers, Worksheet
4. Procedures:
Introduction: To start the class, I will show a 2 minute that talks about how the population in the world grew so
fast over the last 1,000 years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcSX4ytEfcE). At the end of the video, there
is a graph that models the population of the world. I will pause the video here and discuss what kind of graph
this looks like and discuss how they came to this conclusion.
Body: The graph looks like an exponential graph. We can use exponential functions to model different types of
population growth. I will introduce and the population growth function and compare it to the basic exponential
function that they learned before. The students will use this function to estimate the population growth of China,
the price of Manhattan, and the population of bacteria.
Closing: On a piece of paper the student need to answer this question: If you had to summarize this lesson for a
student who was not hear today, would you tell them?
5. Assessment:
Questioning, Observation, Exit Summary
6. Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation:
I need to continuously walk around to make sure everyone (Xavier, Jack, Joey, Matt) is following along with the
examples. If they have the examples written down they can at least use them for homework.
7. Self Reflection and Evaluation of Lesson:
