Biology 1107

Laboratory Syllabus (Updated 1-26-2015)

Spring 2015

Welcome to Biology 1107! Labs begin Tuesday, January 20, 2015

We have three laboratory rooms so please check your class schedule for your section # and room #.
General: All laboratory information will be posted on the 1107 Lecture HuskyCT site within the
Laboratory Information link.

Please prepare for lab each week by reading the assigned pages in the lab manual. A portion
of the weekly quizzes will be based this information.

Some weeks there may be supplemental materials, which will be posted on HuskyCT. Check the
link frequently for these handouts as well as announcements.

Your safety is important: please note that food, beverages, chewing gum, applying cosmetics,
and open-toed shoes are not permitted in the laboratory.

Personal communication devices and electronics (smartphones, iPods, etc.) are to be turned off
and put away during lab.

Materials and Laboratory Guidelines: Refer to the lecture syllabus for this information
Attendance:

You are expected to be in lab on time. If you are tardy, you will miss the quiz and/or receive
late penalties on assignments.

If you register late for this course refer to the Missed Lab policy.

MISSED LAB: If you know you will be unable to attend your lab section (due to illness, professional
obligation, etc.) you must contact BOTH of your TAs no later than 24 hours after your normal
lab time but preferably prior to your lab time.
Documentation for your absence is required that specifically indicates that you are unable to
attend your laboratory period (e.g., written note from a physician, student health services, coach,
advisor, tow bill, etc.). Failure to contact your TAs until the next week of lab is NOT acceptable.
During a given week, it may be possible for you to make up the lab by attending another lab
section. However, you must make arrangements to attend another section that week by contacting
BOTH TAs in charge of the lab section you wish to attend. Refer to HuskyCT for Lab Times
and TA Contact information. It will be at the TAs discretion to allow you to attend their lab
section. You must complete the sign-in sheet, take the quiz and submit any assignments due
at the time you attend lab otherwise late penalties will apply.

If you miss more than three labs for ANY reason you will not pass this course.

Check the UCONN homepage for weather advisory notices and major events.
Should there be either a DELAYED OPENING or an EARLY CLOSING please note the following:
If two hours of the normal lab time are available, we WILL hold lab. If only 1 hour is available, or if the lab is
cancelled in its entirety, lab sections may be rescheduled. Check HuskyCT for announcements.

Laboratory Grade: Your laboratory grade counts for 40% of your course grade and will be based on the
criteria below:

Practical Exams

TWO cumulative practical exams will be given (50 pts each): one for the first
half of the course (molecular and cell biology portion) and one for the second
half (anatomy and physiology portion).

300 points

Quizzes: These will be administered at the start of the lab period; please arrive on time!
Assignments: All written assignments are due at the START of the lab period. Assignments turned in after
this will incur a late penalty of 10% per day, including weekends.

The due dates for assignments are noted on the laboratory schedule (see next page).

ALL written assignments are to be of your OWN creation. You are encouraged to discuss experiments
and the interpretation of results with your lab partners, however, any written work submitted must be your
own - this includes text, graphs and figures. Familiarize yourself with the Plagiarism Policy and the
consequences thereof (see lab manual, p. vii-viii). For more information on community standards and
