Laura Cameron was a summer volunteer at SickKids for the month of June in 2012.She volunteered as a Child Life volunteer on the General Surgery Unit. This is not a report on Laura Cameron’ performance but rather it serves as a role description and acknowledges the hours that she has worked in support of paediatric patients. The role and responsibilities of a Child Life volunteer involve the provision of recreational pursuits and pastimes to children in order to lessen the anxiety associated with hospitalization. ‘The activities might include reading stories, engaging children in a board game or puzzle, assisting patients with fine motor development, accompanying a patient to a large central Recreation/Play Area, as well as offering supportive play practices by means of crafts and creative diversions. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to operate the playroom program in an efficient and safe manner while maintaining a secure facility (i.e. locking cupboards and supervising young children). Volunteers are also frequently called upon to offer respite to a parent who might require a well deserved rest period away from the unit or assist the medical team by comforting a child who might have recently undergone a stressful procedure.
