He was born in Russia to a middle-class family and studied music at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, though he struggled with depression from a young age due to his mother's death and repressing his homosexuality. Tchaikovsky's cause of death in 1893 was officially declared as cholera but is widely believed to have been suicide.

    ,however at the time the cause was declared
    cholera.
