Diabetic Emergency Lab
Introduction:
In This Lab We Learned Why It Is Important To Maintain Proper Blood Sugar
Levels For A Diabetic. We Used Dialysis Tubing To Simulate A Cell Membrane. We
Used Different Solutions In The Beakers To Represent The Bloodstream. We Then
Measured The Mass To See Which Way The Water Moved. We Also Completed The
Naked Egg Experiment To See What Would Happen To An Egg In Syrup, Salt, Water
And Fresh Water.

Conclusion/Questions:
In This Lab I Learned That Water Travels Through A Cells Membrane To
Regulate The Cells Environment. For Example, If The Solution Inside The Cell Is
Stronger Than The Solution Outside Of The Cell. Water Will Travel Inside The Cell
And Regulate The Solution Causing The Cell To Burst. If The Solution Outside The
Cell Is Stronger Than The Solution Inside. Water Leaves The Cell To Regulate The
Solution Outside Of The Cell Causing The Cell To Collapse. This Is Also Why Slugs Die
When You Pour Salt On Top Of Them. They Dehydrate And Die.
Answer The Following Questions:
1. Exercising Helps Regulate The Sugar In The Blood
2. Water Went Inside The Model Because The Solution Inside The Model Was
Stronger Than The One Outside Of It.
3. Hospitals Use Saline Solutions To Hydrate Patients Instead Of Distilled Water
4. Diabetics Need To Consider How Much Insulin They Need To Inject Inside Their
Body Depending On The Activities That They Will Be Doing In A Certain
Amount Of Time. For Example If They Are Going To Exercise They Will Need To
Have Enough Glucose/Sugar To Keep Them Going.
5. Insulin Pumps Pump Insulin Inside The Body When Needed. They Also Show
You If Your Sugar Levels Are To Low That You Will Need To Eat A Protein Bar.
