Defense Mechanisms

Sigmund Freud once said that life was not easy. (Defense)
He said that there were several defense mechanisms in the world
today.

These would be demands upon a poor ego or if you would

feel threatened, felt overwhelmed, or feel if you were about to

collapse because of the weight you had been bearing.

In order to

deal with conflicts that you may encounter in your daily life I
know we have all had those days where it seems like nothing can
go right.

This is where Freud came u with defense mechanisms.

Defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level to help ward

off unpleasant feeling, an example would be anxiety.

So why do we need these defenses?

We use these defense

mechanisms to help ourselves form feeling anxiety, pain, or guilt

in our lives.

Here are some

mechanisms.

Repression,Denial,

projection,displacement, regression, and sublimation.

The defense mechanism that I chose was displacement.

Displacement in Freuds words means that you satisfy an impulse

with a substitute object.

An example of displacement would be

someone who is frustrated by his or her boss at work,

they may

take this frustration home with them and they may yell or fight
with their spouse for no reason.

Just because they were upset at

work in the first place.

I do think the defense mechanism of displacement can be used

in a positive and also a negative way.

I know I have used this

defense mechanism in the negative way a lot of times.

Ill find

myself getting really upset by someone one day and then carrying
that and being upset to someone else that I may talk to that same
day.

I do not think it is healthy to use displacement in this

way at all.

But I did notice that it could also be used in a

positive way as well.

If you are having a really good day in the

office, like your boss gives you raise, or a promotion, or even a

compliment for all your hard work.

This may make you in a very

up beat and happy mood and it could carry on for the rest of your
day, you may smile more or treat the next person that you talk to
that day with a smile and some kind words because you had a good
day at work.
positive way.

This is how I would like to use displacement in a

This is what I need to work on.
