To be completely honest, I never really remember at what point I began
to read. All I know is that I went into kindergarten being able to read
extremely simple books. I do however remember having to read aloud in 1st
grade. I dont know the book exactly, but I remember messing up the order
of the words and my friends and I laughing about how silly it sounded until
the teacher told us to calm down. As far as learning to read I believe I spent
a lot of time reading with my mother before bed. This is where I learned the
majority of my basic reading skills. However, I didnt like to read when I
didnt have to and I never liked reading for fun or entertainment. I think what
made reading meaningful to me was viewing it as a way of attaining
information instead of just linking up words to a story. When I was 8 years old
my father and I decided to build a dirt bike from a kit that had tons of
detailed explanations and instructions and this is where I really learned to
read for detail and make sense of everything. Since I could read the
instructions then actually apply the words I was reading to something that
mattered to me, I began to read more and more and figure out the true
worth of reading. Even to this day I will spend hours reading about engine

layouts and mechanical things rather than reading a novel or story. The
driving factor in learning to read for me was my want to learn about
everything and understand what I could rather than to impress someone or
to emulate them. This is about all I can remember about learning to read
because I have a terrible memory, and never really thought about reading in
this sense..
