The UNF Ogier Gardens is seeking more student volunteers to help maintain the gardens. As student volunteers work in the gardens, they will learn about healthy lifestyles and share that knowledge with others. The gardens aim to combat local food deserts by growing healthy, organic foods for high-impact areas of Jacksonville. Many Jacksonville residents are unaware of neighborhoods with inadequate access to healthy food, which has caused child mortality and diabetes rates in Duval County to increase significantly in recent years. With assistance from UNF students and the community, the gardens hope to diminish these food deserts and create a healthier Jacksonville.

Email Pitch From: Melanie Brodsky from Frederick and Ophelia Tate Ogier Gardens To: Ashley Harding at News4Jax (aharding@wjxt.com) Subject Line: Volunteers Needed at UNFs Ogier Gardens Hi Ashley, I am writing to inform you that the University of North Floridas (UNF) Ogier Gardens is in need of more student volunteers in order to assist in the upkeep of the Gardens. These student volunteers will be able to gain knowledge about living a healthy lifestyle that they can pass on to friends, family, and other people in the community. This is of importance to the Jacksonville public because the UNF Ogier Gardens has been working hard to combat local food deserts by providing a place to grow healthy and organic foods for those high impact areas. Most people living in Jacksonville are unaware of the multiple neighborhoods in Duval County that have inadequate access to healthy food; this has caused the child mortality rate and the diabetes rate in Duval County to increase tremendously over the years. With the assistance and support of UNF students and the Jacksonville community, we can help diminish these food deserts in order to gain a healthier and improved Duval County.
