Circle Time

1. How did you transition children to and from circle time?

The transition to circle time was having the children clean up and pick a color foam square to
sit on. Once circle time was done I called them by color squares, they stacked the squares
then picked what center they wanted to go to.

2. List the activities that you engaged the children in during circle time?
We went over names but this time I called on a child and had them point their name out on
the chart. Once they found their name and told me what it started with they got to pick a little figure
of a boy or girl and put it on the math chart. Then we picked jobs by raising our hands quietly. The
math helper got to come up to the chart and help count how many girls were here, how many boys
were here and then how many friends all together ( 3 girls + 5 boys = 8 friends). We talked about the
date and the weather as well. Then we stood up on our squares and sang Head, Shoulders, Knees
and Toes to get moving a little bit. After the song we sat down and did a chart with picture of trash
and recyclables to sort which were in which category.

3. Describe activities that you engaged the children in during circle time that were initiated by
you?
All of the activities we were doing were initiated by me. During it though they were allowed to
tell us thoughts they had on each activity.

4. How did these activities relate to the current unit theme?

Most of it was basic everyday knowledge but the recycling activity is related to the theme of
Love our Earth that the center is doing for the month of April.

5. Do you feel that you were successful in engaging the children?

Yes I think I engaged the children pretty well. They got really into the math and all counted
out loud together. The recycling chart was also engaging. They enjoyed getting up and
deciding where to put the pictures on the chart.

6. Were your activities developmentally appropriate and appropriate for a large group?
Yes they were appropriate developmentally and for large groups.

7. Is there anything you would do differently next time in regard to planning and/or carrying out
circle time?
I think next time I will not let them pick what color squares they wanted. There were only a
certain amount of each color and there was some conflict over the pink ones amongst the girls.
