Turn of Phrase or My Two Cents

Overview
This is your chance to investigate an art style, medium, or content of your
choosing. Using your initial process journal research, you will develop, plan,
and execute one of the following projects.

1. Turn of Phrase
Using the research you have completed on artists who work with text and
street art, create an artistic response, critique, or exploration of any aspect
of the genre you select. This should be a mixed media presentation unless
you prepare an alternative proposal that is approved.

2. My Two Cents
With this option, you can explore any concept or medium of your choosing.
You are either working towards communicating a conceptual message, or
you are investigating the potential and limitation of a medium. Research
artists who work with similar concepts or materials to learn from the
successes and failures of other artists.

Process Journal
Do not forget that all research, sketches, material experiments, discarded
ideas, etc. need to be collected in your process journal. This will be a
significant portion of your grade for the independent project. You need to
visually and textually represent the artistic inquiry that you engage in.

General Criteria
Because this is an independent study, I want to give you as much freedom
from criteria as possible to ensure your artistic process is not restricted. As a
starting point consider these suggestions:
(1) Drawings, paintings, and mixed media work should be roughly 18 x 24
inches unless scale is an important factor in your image development.
(2) Sculpture size will depend on physical constraints and level of detail,
but aim for at least 12 inches.
