Antiparallel
The two strands of DNA run
antiparallel (opposite directions) to
each other
This is due to bonding arrangements
which allows the molecule to be stable

1) Only read template DNA in one direction
3 to 5
2) Only add to the end of existing double
stranded DNA at the 3 end
Therefore they CANNOT start synthesis of
DNA from scratch.

polymerases

RNA Primase enzymes begin the
replication process by building a small
complementary RNA segment on the
strand at the beginning of the
replication fork
These short, 10 to 60 pieces of RNA
are called RNA primers.
