PAPER COLLAGE POP-UP MASKS

MASKS AROUND THE

WORLD

AFRICA
They are used in religious and social events to represent the
spirits of ancestors or to control the good and evil forces in
the community. They are used to ask for fertile crops, rain,
harvesting, war preparation, and weddings, for newly born
kids and for funerals. Mask is worn by a dancer that then
becomes carrier of the spirit of the mask, a sort of a
representative between the tribe and a spirit. This trance-like
state is accomplished with a specific music and a dance.

CHINA
Chinese New Year Masks display the
feelings and emotions of happiness
associated with the festival.

MEXICO
Contemporary uses of masks in Mexico
include dia de los muertos skulls to honor the
deceased family members. They are also used
in the popular luchas libres (wresling).

ITALY
In the past, masks in Italy were used as a device for
hiding the persons identity and social status. Many
centuries later, Venetian masks re-emerged as the
symbol of the Venetian Carnival, a parade and street fair
celebrating a high standard of living. Wearing Venetian
masks has spread to Halloween, masquerade balls, and
what north and South Americans call Mardi Gras
