Provide objectives (1 minute): = Today, we are going to learn about Elmer the Elephant! You will be answering and asking questions while | read this book aloud. (Show the Elmer book to the students) = You will also learn about what the main idea of Elmer is and get the chance to explain why you are one of a kind. 2. Activate prior knowledge (1 minute): - Raise your hand if you have read about Elmer the Elephant before? ~ Does anyone know where elephants live? = Just by looking at the cover, give a thumbs-up if you think Elmer is beautiful. 3, Demonstrate knowledge or skill (3 minutes): = While lam reading about Elmer, | will be asking questions aloud and you will be able to ask questions too. - Read pages 1-4 and say: After looking at the other elephants | have a question- “Why does Elmer look so different?” Hmmm... Let's keep reading and see if we find out! ~ Read pages 5-8 and say: Now I'm thinking “Where is Elmer sneaking off to?” ce Provide guided practice (~5 minutes): - Read pages 9-12 and ask the students what questions they have. (Respond to a few questions with encouraging, open-ended comments) ~ Ask: What is Elmer going to do ~ Read pages 13-16 and say: Now the animals don’t recognize Elmer! - Read pages 17-24 and say: I think Elmer really enjoys when he stands out! Raise your hand if you think Elmer likes to stand out. - Read pages 25-28 and say: Uh-oh! What happened to Elmer? - Finish reading the book (pages 29-30) and ask the students what questions they have about Elmer's story. those berries? Check for understanding (~5 minutes): ~ Think-Pair-Share: Ask students to think about their favorite thing about Elmer and how they would describe Elmer. Students will think independently, discuss it with a partner, and then share their ideas aloud during whole-group discussion ~ Using the graphic organizer, fll it out as a class before sending students to write about why they are one of a kind. © Iwill informally check for understanding by listening to the partner conversations about Elmer and by noting which students participate in the group discussion. - What is the main idea of this story? ©. If'students seem confused or unsure, explain that Elmer shows us how important it is to embrace our differences because that’s what makes you one of a kind. Provide extended practice and transfer (“15 minutes): - Ifstudents were sitting at the rug then I will ask them to quietly walk back to their desks 50 I can pass out the activity. - Before passing out the worksheet | will hold it up and describe what they will be doing. - You will be writing about how you are one of a kind! Close your eyes and think about what makes you stand out or what makes you special. This could include hobbies or sports or something about your personality. - Pass out the worksheet and tell the students that once they write their sentence about what makes them one of a kind, they can draw a picture of what they wrote about. ~ Tell the students to let me know when they are done and to raise their hand if they have any questions, 7. Differentiation/Further Practice (~10 minutes): Allow additional time for the students who need more time with their worksheet. Walk around the room and assist students when they seem stuck or ask for help. For ELL students, tell them to focus more on the drawing aspect if writing is still difficult for them. For those who finish early, they have two choices: a. Students can read the poem and rehearse it for the rest of the class towards the end. of the lesson OR b. Students can begin working on their Elephant Parade Garland. Instead of Just coloring it, | will also ask the students to write words that describe Elmer on it. The garland will be hung in our room or on the classroom door. 8. Wrap-up (1 minute): TOTAL LESSON TIME: Today, you learned about Elmer the Elephant! You answered and asked questions about Elmer's story. You also learned that the main idea of Elmer is to embrace your differences because that is what makes you one of a kind. 5 minutes: 9, Assessment: Students will be informally assessed during the interactive read aloud by actively listening and participating in partner and whole-group discussions. ‘Students will demonstrate understanding of the main idea (embracing our difference) by writing and drawing what makes them different on the “I am one of a kind because...” worksheet. 10.
