After using the online dating application Ludo, two young lovers, Peter and
Georgie, prepare to finally meet one another at the local cafe, however Peter
has been lying about his persona online.
Synopsis
Based in the year 2020, Ludo explores the way in which technology has
overtaken everyday facets of life, with a particular focus on online dating.
As someone who struggled on the dating scene, Peter, a 25-year-old male,
presents himself as a young, handsome man on the Ludo application. When
in reality, Peter is disorganised, overweight and lazy. Peter is motivated by the
ease in which he can attract women online due to his ulterior persona and
charming personality online. He craves this attention from women.
Georgie is a gorgeous young woman, aged 24, who has found it hard to find
the perfect partner. After a short amount of time on Ludo she began talking to
Peter and it didnt take long for her to think that he was the one.
Ludo commences by illustrating the two characters getting ready within their
homes, for their first meeting. It is evident that these characters are vastly
different. In contrast to Georgie, Peters morning routine is disordered. He
wraps a ratted towel around his waist, he pulls out his nose hairs, he attempts
to find clothes to wear in the mess of his bedroom and he uses gladwrap to
pull in his large belly in under his shirt.
Georgie is organised and takes time and effort preparing for her date. The
dissimilarity between Georgie and Peter is exemplified as she takes time and
effort getting ready. She tans her slim figure, selects an outfit from her colourcoordinated wardrobe and puts on her makeup. All the while communicating
with Peter via the Ludo application.
After Peters many struggles to arrive at the local caf on time, they finally
meet and Georgie is confronted with the shock that Peter is not the muscly,
attractive man she was talking to online, but is instead a sweaty, overweight
man. Out of politeness, Georgie continues the date only to fall for Peter. They
conclude the date agreeing to meet again. As Peter walks off, he begins
messaging other women on Ludo.
Exegesis:
Ludo explores online dating sites, due to their increasing popularity and the
notion that more and more people are meeting their life partners online. In 8
years the amount of people using online dating sites grew by over 15%. This
amount will continue to flourish in the next 5 years. In 2015, there are 91
million people using dating sites and applications all around the world. As
70% of these participants are aged between 16-34, I decided to make the
main protagonist aged 25.
I find this topic particularly interesting as when I think of online dating, I
automatically contemplate the many risks that relate to this. The notion of
catfishing has become well-known in the past few years. It is very easy for an
individual to take another persons identity. The motivation behind why this
may occur is very varied; monetary gain, boredom, craving attention, secret
love ect.
I considered creating Peter as quite a threatening, creepy character. However,
in keeping with the light-heated, comedic nature of the script, I decided it
would be best for Peter to be motivated by the attention of a beautiful women
and keep his intentions innocent.
In some ways, I believe that online dating is somewhat superficial. It seems
that people shop for who they believe is attractive, rather than noting their
interests, goals, morals, or other important features to ones personality. It is a
belief that there are other aspects that draw two people together, such as
smell and genetics. For this reason, I thought it would be an interesting turn of
events if Georgie fell for the unattractive Peter, rather than the one that
appeared online.
To further establish the setting of the script in Sydney 2020, I decided to
include a prominent, technological advancement in the script. With the current
hype and interest around the Apple Watch, I believed it would be stimulating
to explore this and the way in which digital watch may function in the future.
The watch is the only commonality between the two characters. It acts as an
interactive diary that alerts the owner of their bedtime, meetings, messages
they have received and can even act as a credit card.
The sound causes Peter to look towards the digital watch on his
wrist that flashes the word Bedtime. The lights in the room
automatically dim and the volume of the LCD TV lowers. He looks
back towards the Ludo application and begins to furrow his brow
before throwing the tablet down on the couch next to him. As he
stands, the chip crumbs fall to the ground and he begins walking out
of the room.
When approaching the doorway, he is interrupted by a sound from
his Watch.
(Ding sound)
He looks at his watch to see One new message from Georgie on
Tablet- 11:50pm. Peter quickly scuttles back to see the message
from Olivia that reads Me too babe xoxo.
INT- GEORGIES BATHROOM- DAY TIME
Georgie stands in front of the basin staring at her reflection in the
mirror. She gazes down at her body looking dissatisfied. She reaches
for the tanning lotion in the sink cupboard and begins gently
rubbing it over her long legs.
INT- PETERS BATHROOM- DAY TIME
Peter steps out of the shower and wraps a ratted, old towel around
his large waist. He snatches his moisturiser off the shelf and rubs it
vigorously onto his face before tilting his head back to see his black,
thick nose hairs. Using tweezers, he grabs a firm hold of the hairs
and takes a deep breathe in as he prepares to pull them out.
INT- GEORGIES BEDROOM- DAY TIME
Georgie stands in her fluffy white dressing gown as she stares
blankly at her large wardrobe. The clothes are sorted by colour and
all hang neatly on metallic coat hangers. Her shoes are neatly lined
up on a shelf that runs from the ceiling to the ground. She reaches
for heeled, black boots and a small red dress.
INT- PETERS BEDROOM -DAY TIME
Standing in his old towel with his hands on his hips, Peter looks
around his bedroom. The dresser drawers are open with clothes
spewing out. The floor is covered in dirty clothes, food packets and
(Ding sound)
Her watch reads Taxi approaching- 2 minutes
EXT- BUS STOP- DAY TIME
Within the sheltered bus stop there are two large TV screens,
protected by glass. People stand around staring at the screen whilst
waiting for their bus.
Peter, separated from the group of people, stands beside the road
clenching his jaw and frowning. He looks to his watch that reads
Bus- Delayed- 30 Minutes.
In frustration, he lets out a shout. The people around take little
notice.
Peter looks around for an alternate mode of transportation. The road
is dead. He lets out a large sigh before he begins to sprint at full
speed down the street. A squeaking sound can be heard coming
from underneath his shirt caused by the gladwrap taped to his belly.
EXT- CAF ON SUBURBAN STREET- MIDDAY
As the taxi pulls up outside of the Caf, Gerogie presses her watch
against a swipe screen on the taxi door. A notification on the watch
pops up that states Transaction approved- $36.84 and the taxi door
unlocks.
Men inside Avenue caf gawk through the window shop front
towards Georgie, as she exits the taxi.
Georgie stands on the street clutching her purse. She continually
looks both directions hoping to see Peter appear. At times she has to
stand on her tip-toes to see behind a large group.
(Ding Sound)
Georgie excitedly looks at her watch. A message from Peter reads
Almost there, Ill see you in a bit. She smiles and bites her bottom
lip, before heading into the caf.
EXT- SUBURBN STREET
Peter, out of breath with sweat trickling down his face, has now
slowed down to a jog. He stretches the bottom of his shirt, pulling it
As Peter walks down the street he opens on his watch, what appears
to be a list of girls names and their pictures. He crosses Georgies
name off the list. The next name on the list is Olivia. He begins
writing Olivia a message that reads Cant wait to finally meet you
tomorrow.
INT- TAXI- LATE AFTERNOON
Georgie sits in the taxi with her watch on loudspeaker speaking with
a girlfriend
GEORGIE
Well, he wasnt at all like the guy in his profile. (BEAT) But, oh my
god, he was sooo much better.
