Garver 2 found out how | could relate these things to my racing, | became hooked. | then started reading all sorts of information from bike setup to motor specs and personal training routines to better my knowledge and gain that competitive edge. All throughout my racing career | would read and write about racing from new setups | made to race results. | kept them all in a race book so Thad them for the next year or for a similar track. This period of time | would consider as my conversion to more reading to obtain information and not so much for pleasure. At this time, social media was also starting to become big in the world of racing. The exchange of ideas and the ability to keep up with riders in championships and personally made it so much easier for a ‘me to stay on top of things. | honestly would check Facebook constantly trying to keep my fingers on the pulse of whatever was new and happening in my world. On the other side of the story, | was enrolled in a cyber-school so that my father and | could travel and race all over the east coast. This experience had a negative effect on my literacy narrative because it made me less motivated to work on my reading or writing capabilities which is a common problem with this type of education (Hart). | could get on the computer in the morning and just run through the motions in two hours and be out doing something else before lunch. The simplicity of the lessons never really made me slow down and learn to write well instead | just found myself doing the bare minimum. So when | got to high school, | hit a wall in English because | never took the time to learn how to write. During my high school years, | really learned about how to decipher the information that I really loved to read into what was fact and what was forged and ‘then form my own opinion on the material. Basically my research skills were honed to the point that | felt confident when my father gave me two thousand dollars and told me to create a way to save money on the family farm. This was the biggest single event that shaped my literacy
