Bleeding Kansas Newscast Activity


Group Roles:
Group Member # 1: Anchor: The Anchor introduces and
leads the Newscast. Goes from story to story. Must work
closely with other members of the group to ensure the
presentation runs smoothly.
Group Members # 2 and #3: will work on the situation
in Lawrence, Kansas (Sack of Lawrence) news story.
Group Members: #4 and #5: will conduct interviews
with John Brown, Charles Sumner and Stephen Douglas.
Group Member # 6: They will create a pro-slavery in
Kansas poster and an Anti-Slavery in Kansas Poster.
These posters must contain a slogan and a picture. They
will be presented during the newscast. (Total of two
posters)

Topics that must be covered:


1)The situation in Lawrence Kansas and present it in an
interview form. You must turn in a typed script of
300 words. (150 words for each person) (Many of
these words will be questions)
Make sure to include the key details around the
event. What is the background, what happened
during the event and what is the result. Include
as much detail as possible.
2)Interviews with John Brown, Charles Sumner and
Stephen Douglas. 300 word typed script. (150 words
for each group member)
Make sure to include John Browns views on the
slavery and the lengths he is willing to go to end
slavery? Focus your interview on the
Pottawatomie Massacre. What is his role and the
details of this event?

Make sure to discuss the Kansas-Nebraska Act


with Stephen Douglas? What are his motives
behind proposing it? How did he get it passed?
What is its result?
Make sure to discuss Sumners views on slavery.
How does Sumner feel about the situation in
Kansas? What happens to Sumner due to him
expressing his views?
Include as much detail as possible.

3)Create a pro-slavery Kansas poster and an antislavery Kansas poster. These posters must contain a
slogan and a picture. They will be presented during
the newscast.
