PROLOGUE
Lights up
Setting: The boys locker room. Jonathan Marcus and Anden are in the locker room stretching.
All wearing jerseys. Props: some sports bags, water bottles, etc. Lights turn on.
Anden: (To Marcus) Alright! Todays the day! I can feel it! Im gonna beat you for sure Marcus!
Marcus: I dont know Anden, Im feeling pretty good today, I think Ill come out on top. Again.
Jonathan: Stop being so cocky, Marcus. We need to focus. I heard that some college scouts are
out there today, this could be our chance to get a scholarship.
Anden: (Disheartened) Youre right Jonathan, but Marcus will probably be the only one that the
scouts look at. (Disgusted, jealous, and enraged) Its like hes the only one on the track team.
Were here too.
Jonathan: It isnt fair! You always win! I just wish that something would happen to even the
balance of luck.
Marcus: Come on guys! Cheer up! We always have ran by eachothers side. Just because Im
faster doesnt mean Im better than you. Lets go show those scouts what we can do! (Leaves
stage right)
Anden: Its so lame that hes faster than us. Why is he so special? Hes just so (clenches fist).
Jonathan: We work harder than he does but we never catch up.
Anden: Whatever, lets get going.
Jonathan: I wonder what it would be like if Marcus wasnt on the team anymore...
Anden: It sure would be nice (grabs on to Jonathan and drags him offstage stage right) but we
really need to get going.
(Lights turn off)
PARADOS
Setting: The boys locker room. Three actors labeled as 1 2 and 3 are all dressed in a college
scout uniform. Lights turn on.

Actor 1: Marcus scores a big win. His hard work has finally paid off.
Actor 2: As Marcus succeeds, his team mates all rejoice in brotherhood and celebrate the victory
their champion has brought home.
Actor 3: But although everyone is happy for Marcus, his success has planted an evil seed in his
team mates, a seed of jealousy and hatred.
Actor 2: Marcus is too immersed in the golden rays of victory to turn back and see his friends
starting to envy him.
Actor 1: As the team prepares to celebrate at the after party, one of his team mates starts to plot
his plan that will lead to Marcuss downfall.
All Chorus: Tread carefully Marcus. A dark seed in the heart of your brother will bring you
down. Marcus, you have been warned. (Lights turn off)
SCENE 1
Setting: After game party. Anden, Jonathan, and Kaitlyn center stage with two friends. A cooler
with drinks stage left. Extra one sitting next to cooler drinking.
(Lights go on and Marcus enters stage right.)
Friend One:Hey Marcus! Congrats on your scholarship!
Friend Two:Congrats! And nice race. You left them all in the dust!(Claps Marcus on the back,
checks phone) Oh crap! I forgot to give someone a ride to this party! Come on! (Grabs Friend
One and runs off stage right)
Anden: (says in a stage whisper) Its like we dont even exist.
Marcus:(Turns head towards retreating figures) Hey, thanks guys! (Turns back towards group
center stage) Will you look at that? Whos the star? (Pumps fist into air)
(Another extra enters stage right and walks toward other extra. They start talking, inaudible.)
Jonathan: Dont jinx it. Who knows how long your golden streak is gonna last?(Then more
quietly) Not for much longer.
Marcus: True, true. But whos gonna steal it Jonathan? (laughs) Its time to get the payoff of all
my hard work.

Anden: Whos saying youre the best? Just you.

Marcus: Hey Kaitlyn. Who won the track meet? Whos the best?
Kaitlyn: Im the best here but, you did win the track meet sooo(rolls eyes) right now youre
the best track star.
Jonathan: You need an unbiased opinion. Shes your girlfriend. Of course shes gonna say that.
Marcus: Ok then Jonathan. Who do you think is the golden boy right now? (Jonathan doesnt
answer) Were waiting...
Jonathan: ...You(clenches teeth while saying it)
Marcus: See? But Im not always gonna be the golden boy. You and Anden will steal the victory
soon.
Kaitlyn: Yeah, yeah. (rolls eyes) Everyone knows youre the best.
Marcus: Just right now.
Anden: (snorts) Stop trying to be the nice kid.
Jonathan: (nervous) Im just gonna(quietly starts scootching towards the cooler with the
drinks, the friends by the cooler say hi then realize they need to leave. They exit stage left.)
Marcus: Hey Jonathan! Get a drink for me!
Jonathan: Ok. (Grabs a drink out of the cooler. His hand fumbles around in his pocket and he
keeps glancing back making it obvious to the audience that hes slipping something into
Marcuss drink. The others keep talking.)
Anden: I hate this! We all know that I work harder than you! It should be me getting the pay off
for my hard work.
Kaitlyn: Anden! Just because you dont have the talent doesnt mean you get to pick on others!
(Pushes Anden)
Marcus: Hey, hey calm down. (Jonathan walks over to group and holds out drink to Marcus)
Thanks Jonathan. (Grabs drink from Jonathan and takes a gulp. Then turns to Kaitlyn) We
shouldnt let Anden get to us.

Kaitlyn: Fine. But I still want to punch him. (Marcus and Kaitlyn leave stage right)
Anden: There goes Marcus, the golden boy (Makes finger quotes around the words golden boy)
He always thinks hes all that. I hope someone teaches him a lesson. (Disgusted. Leaves stage
left.)
(Jonathan is left standing in center stage. He is smirking.)
Jonathan: (Gazing off to where Marcus left) Dont worry Anden. Im already on it. If this works
then others will get to shine. (looks nervous again) I, I had to do it. I know this is going to work.
(more confident) Theres no backing out now. (Leaves stage left. Lights go down.)
CHORUS 1
Setting at rise: Actors 1 2 and 3 are all dressed in casual party wear.
Actor 3: Anden and Marcus have always been rivals, both vying for victory over the other. But
lately Marcus has been beating Anden at every turn.
Actor 1: Anden is fed up with all the attention Marcus gets when he wins every single race. The
fact that Marcus is known as the Golden Boy and how no matter how hard he tries, he is
simply never good enough.
Actor 3: Meanwhile, an evil seed has reached it has reached its peak as it lies in Jonathans
heart and mind. A darkness caused by Jonathan is surrounding Marcuss victory.
Actor 2: Marcus is blind, surrounded by the golden rays caused by pride. No clue that itll ever
be ripped away soon.
Actor 1: The life of Marcus will soon ripple in an endless current of bad decisions. Soon, very
soon. (Lights turn off)
SCENE 2
Setting: Desk set diagonally on corner upstage left. Ms. Halmer is sitting behind desk while
Mom is glowering while sitting on a chair next to desk.
(Lights turn on. Three knocks sound at the door)
Ms. Halmer: (Blank voice) Come in Marcus. (Marcus walks in stage right. Mom glares at him.
He becomes uncomfortable because he doesnt know why shes mad.)
Marcus: Hi Mom, Mrs. Halmer. Why am I in the principals office?

Mom: You know perfectly why.

Marcus:(sarcastic) I do Mom.
Mom: (angry) Why did you do it? You have so much talent! Or was that all fake too?!
(disappointed) I thought that youd be better than this. I had so many hopes for you. I still
dontcant believe it. Why Marcus? Just, just why?
Marcus: (confused) Uhhhh.What did I do this time?
Ms. Halmer: You really dont know do you?
Marcus: Just tell me already! Someone!
Mom: (laughs sadly) Dont play that game. We know now.
Ms. Halmer: You recall that surprise drug test from a few days ago right?
Marcus: The one a few days after the meet?(Mom scoffs and shakes her head)
Ms. Halmer:(nods) Well, your drug test came back positive.
Marcus: Wait, what?
Ms. Halmer: Yes you did just hear that. The drug test came back positive.
Marcus: What the hell? Youre lying.
Mom: Tell us the truth!
Marcus: I have no idea whats going on!
Ms. Halmer:(glances between the two of them) Ill leave you two alone. (Stands up and starts
heading for stage right) Just dont destroy my office like a pack of wild hyenas ok? (Leaves
stage right)
Marcus: You gotta believe me. I didnt do it!
Mom: I dont know what to believe. I dont believe. I trust you but, the proof is right there.
Marcus, Ive watched you grow up and never once I believed something like this would happen.
Marcus: Someone mustve set me up!

Mom: I dont know what to say to you. I want to believe you but the proof is right there.
(There is silence. Then Kaitlyn barges in stage right)
Kaitlyn: Really Marcus? You had to do it?
Marcus: Wait Kaitlyn! I didnt do it!
Mom: So you heard about his drug test huh? (Shakes head) Im sorry. (Leaves stage right)
Marcus: Kaitlyn, I swear I didnt do it. Im not even sure what I did.
Kaitlyn: You didnt do it? Oh really? Then how come your coach told me youd been taking
steroids?
Marcus: I didnt do it! Someone set me up!
Kaitlyn: Thats what they all say. Im really disappointed Marcus. I never thought you were a
liar. I really want to believe. (earnestly) I really do, but theres nothing to prove your innocence.
Marcus: Wait Kaitlyn! Listen, I would never take steroids. You know that. Ill find a way to
prove it I swear.
Kaitlyn: I hope so. I know you will, but until you do (shakes head) I just cant deal with this
right now. (Runs out stage right)
Marcus: Kaitlyn! Please listen! Ill find a way to prove I didnt do it, I swear! (more determined)
I will prove it Kaitlyn. I will show everyone. I promise you. (Lights turn off)
CHORUS 2:
(Setting at Rise: Actors 1 2 and 3 show up in sports wear.)
Actor 1: Marcus has been falsely accused of an action he would never commit.
Actor 2: Even his mother has fallen into the puddle of lies and deceit (make it sound very
appealing)
Actor 3: Everything that was once important to Marcus, has now flown out of the window.
Actor 1: His opportunity for a scholarship.

Actor 2: His beloved girlfriend.

Actor 3: And the worst of all,
All Actors: His mothers respect.
Actor 3:Marcus is thrown into a mess without knowing all the facts.
Actor 2: Suspicions rise and blame has fallen.
Actor 1: An innocent rival has been blamed while the culprit is simply watching. (Lights turn
off)
Scene 3
Setting: In locker room. Establish that there are stairs stage left. Anden is rummaging through
his bags. Lights turn on and Marcus enters from the stairs.
Anden: (thinking that it is Johnathan behind him) Hey Johnathan, where did you put my water?
(No response) Johnathan? (turns around) Oh! Marcus! Dude coach just told us! It sucks that
youre getting kicked off the team! What the hell did you do?
Marcus: You know fully well what happened. You did it after all. Why? I thought you were my
friend!
Anden: I dont know! I didnt do anything! I AM your friend!
Marcus: Bullshit! You stabbed me in the back! I will never run again! Did you really think that
it was a good idea? I lost my scholarship, Im off the team, hell Kaitlyn even left me. You
destroyed my life! Just because I was a better runner than you?
Anden: CALM DOWN! I dont know what is going on but you need to settle down for half a
second and listen to me! I didnt do...
Marcus: Like hell Ill calm down! I know you did it! You were always second best! You were
angry right before the last race! You were angry at the party. You have always been jealous of
me! So you removed me from the competition. (Advances on Anden)
Anden: (circles around Marcus, is now in front of the stairs) I didnt do anything! I have been
angry but I didnt do anything about it. After all, at the end of the day you are my friend.
Marcus: You are no friend of mine (Runs at Anden)

Anden: I swear I didnt do it! Please Marcus! Jonathan was always talking about what life would
be like without you! (Marcus shoves him down the stairs)
Marcus: What! No! Shit! (tries to catch Anden before he falls but cannot) Anden no! (Crashing
sound) Dude Im so sorry man! I really thought it was you. (No response) Get up bro, lets go get
Johnathan. (Still no response) Are you ok? You dont look comfortable, why are you all
crooked? Anden? Anden!! Shit! (rushes down the stairs) (lights go down) Anden! Anden get up!
Im sorry bro just get up! God damn it get up! (sobbing sound) Jonathan what have you done!
CHORUS 3:
Setting at Rise: Actors 1 2 and 3 show up with athletic shorts and t-shirts. Lights turn on.
Actor 1:Marcuss rage has blinded his judgement.
Actor 2:It has pushed him to a point where there is no going back.
Actor 3:Pushed him so bad to where he harms his own friend.
All Actors: Anden!
Actor 2:Marcuss mind now lies in a puddle of regret and remorse.
Actor 1: Now finally he turns to the real culprit, heeding Andens last words.
Actor 3: Anden is gone. And there is no coming back. (Lights turn off)
Scene 4
Setting: Outside of school (school day is over) Jonathan is whistling a tune and walking with his
hands in his pockets. Marcus runs onstage.
Marcus: Jonathan!
Jonathan: (Looks smug) Hey look who it is! Our champion! The star of the track team! The
asshole who got kicked off the team! Its my turn to shine! Me and Anden...
Marcus: (interrupts)Anden is dead.
Jonathan: Will... wait WHAT?
Marcus: I pushed him down the stairs and I think I broke his neck. I assumed he was the one
who set me up. He was always angry with me for being better than him. As he fell the said it

was you. Im a fool! Of course it was you. You always started the arguments between me and
Anden and watched our friendship fall apart. You knew I would blame him. You knew I would.
Jonathan: (Shaking) You.... You killed him?
Marcus: I think so. He didnt look so good and I didnt stick around to find out for sure.
Jonathan: I... I... Why? Why did this happen? You were only supposed to get kicked off the
track team! I only wanted a chance to show what I could do! I just didnt want to outshined by
you. I wanted Anden and me to have a chance to be something great. Why did you kill him?
Why?
Marcus: I didnt mean to!
Jonathan: Does it matter what you meant to do? You killed somebody! You just went from
track star to murderer in a couple of hours!
Marcus: Because of you!
Jonathan: Not even! Its not my fault you went on a rampage.
Marcus: This is bigger than some fucking high school track team! I had a scholarship! I was
accepted to colleges! I could have been an olympic runner if I kept this up! I lost everything!
My mom hates me, I lost my scholarship, Kaitlyn left me, I lost everything! I even killed my
best friend. All because you were jealous of me? This is all your fault!
Jonathan: Who gives a rats ass about what you lost! Anden is dead! The track team should be
the least of your worries!
Marcus: Im not hung up on the track team, Im trying to tell you why I did it!
Jonathan: Do you feel that hopelessness? Do you feel that no matter how fast you run you will
never be great! Thats how I always felt! Thats why I had to do what I did.
Marcus: You could have left! You never were a good runner, why did you stick with it? Youre
smart! You could have used that! You took everything away from me because you couldnt
accept that you would never be the runner you dreamed of being.
Jonathan: You act like I was the one who killed him!
Marcus: You destroyed both of our lives!

Jonathan: I destroyed yours. Killing Anden wasnt my fault!

Marcus: It should be you with the broken neck. Anden didnt deserve it. You did! (Punches
Jonathan)
Police: Hey you get down! (Rushes on stage) On the ground! All the way! Hands behind you
back! (Marcus complies) There we go. You are under arrest for the murder of Anden
Superonovich!
Jonathan: It doesn't matter what I did, at the end of the day, you are the one who will rot in jail.
(Lights go down)
Chorus 4
Setting at Rise:Actors 1 2 and 3 come dressed in police uniforms.
Actor 1:He finally did it
Actor 2:He finally achieved his real dream, a dream so dark it has to be fulfilled by crushing
others.
Actor 3:Jonathan has successfully,
Actor 2:single handedly, destroyed Marcuss life.
Actor 1:He has taken everything Marcus cares about.
Actor 3:Marcus, after being stripped of everything he loves, after being disowned by his own
mother,after all the bullshit that has happened in his life!
Actor 2:He is still is waking up to face more shit in his life
Actor 1:Marcus gets arrested. (Lights turn off)
Exodus
Setting: Jail, Marcus is sitting by himself alone, corner of stage right. Lights turn on. Jonathan
walks in stage left. Leans against wall while Marcus ignores him for a little bit.
Marcus: (Bitterly) Are you happy now? Youve got everything you want dont you? Here I am in
jail and you are out there having the time of your life.

Jonathan: You know,(sighs) I did give you steroids, but I lost my friend. So did you. Even with
just the drugs
Marcus: I know okay! Id be off the track team, no college, no future but definitely not a
murderer! (silence) Why are you here?
Jonathan: I dont know. Maybe to rub it into your face. Maybe because Im sorry. Maybe
because, I regret it, but I also dont. Maybe its a mix of everything.
Marcus: (pauses, then says angrily) Was he ever your friend? (Jonathan is silent) I still cant
believe I did it. I cant believe I killed him. He was my best friend. (starts sobbing)
Jonathan: Im sorry.
Marcus: (angrily) For what? For drugging me? For ruining me and Andens friendship? For
what?
Jonathan: For everything. (Then voice hardens as if to defend himself) But Im not the one who
killed him.
Marcus: Ill never forgive myself for that. But if you werent here none of this would have ever
happened!
Jonathan: But
Marcus: (Blowing up angrily) You have no right! You have no fucking right to act like you
didnt do anything when this whole fucking thing is your fault as much as mine! I know, I killed
him (half-sobbing) but you, you
Jonathan: Its not my fucking fault Anden was always in your shadow! Its not my fault your
friendship was ruined! You could have always done something! You could have let us have a
chance! You could have taken time off to let the world see us for even a little but! (storms out
stage left)
Marcus: (Deflates once Jonathan leaves. He breaks down, voice is hollow) He left. They all left.
Theyre never coming back. Never ever. Im stuck in this hellhole. (scoffs bitterly) Exactly where
I belong. If I had been more patient. If Id been more, (Pauses then explodes) open-minded. If I
hadnt jumped to conclusions! If, if, if! That still doesnt change what I did. (Voice is bitter) Ifs
dont change the present. Im still here and hes still dead. (Puts head down on knees. Lights turn
off)
