Objective 28: Distinguish between the various definitional and

theoretical models of abnormal behavior

!
In theory, abnormal behavior is behavior that does not conform to the standards
that society has set. There have been many attempts to define what the true definition
of abnormal behavior is, all have failed. Abnormal behavior could be classified in many
different ways because everyone acts differently. Just because someone does
something a little differently than you do, does that mean they exhibit abnormal
behavior? That is the question that holds psychologists and other professionals back
from truly defining abnormal behavior.

In this article it talks about how there is no right answer to defining abnormal behavior.
For example, if most of the people in the population smoke, but you do not, then your
behavior is considered abnormal. Sometimes the majority of people can be considered
abnormal.

Rutgers did a social experiment on abnormal behavior. A man walked to a door and was
going to open it and stopped and waited to see how the people around him would react.
Many people questioned what he was doing and went around him or walked away.
Because it was not what normal people do, he was exhibiting abnormal behavior.
