Title: An analysis of the past and a look to the future of crowns
& bridges done by undergraduate Dental Students from UMST.
Retrospective study.

Abstract: The University of Medical Sciences & Technology,

Faculty of Dentistry, was established in 1998, providing dental
treatment for the community. Over the course of the years, the
faculty has been progressing and developing its services by
upgrading its dental units and the quality of the dental treatments
delivered to the patients.
In the fixed prosthodontics department, students have been
thoroughly trained throughout semester 7 and 8 on plastic teeth
to deliver optimal preparations and learn how to perform
laboratory procedures. During semester 9 and 10 as part of the
requirements, each student delivered a minimum of 6 abutments,
with an average of 8 preparations per student and up to 15 in
cases of some students. Treatments delivered include crowns,
conventional & adhesive bridges, post and core, and indirect
veneers.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels of success
and failure and the prevalence of causes of fixed prosthesis failure
among cases treated by undergraduate dental students.

Records of the treated patients where obtained from the students

logbooks and presentations, where the patients where contacted
and requested to be examined clinically and radiographically in
the department of fixed prosthodontics.
An analysis of all the cases done by undergraduate students was
carried out to asses the success and failure rate. 96% of the cases
treated by the undergraduate students from 2010-2014 (5
batches) turned out to be successful.
In conclusion, the success rate is high compared to what was
found in the literature. The most common restoration failure was
caused by fracture or dislodgment of the restorations retained by
prefabricated post.
