My mise en scene consisted of two contrasting outfits, which therefore were

signifiers of different emotions, as well as various props. Due to R&B conventions

of sexualising females and adhering to the theory of the Male Gaze, my artist
wore a sleek lace red dress. This not only lived up to the conventions but
highlighted her vulnerability under men as in these scenes she is waiting for her
negligent boyfriend to turn up and her NVC appears to be upset and forlorn. The
2nd outfit completely contrasts this as well as R&B conventions. She covers up
her skin and wears an all black outfit. Black connotes mystery and power in
which she obtains when she wears this outfit at some points in the music video.
The fact she's covered up also gives her power as she is not subjected by men
through the male gaze. My artists also wears black lipstick which lessens her
vulnerability, as her sexual aura isn't exaggerated through the red lipstick. Black
lipstick decreases her weakness as she appears less feminine and therefore more
dominant, according to societies standards. However some scenes show my
artist wearing the black outfit, with red lipstick. This signifies how although she
tries to be strong and overcome her boyfriend, she is still under his spell/control
(as seen when she wears the red lipstick-the male gaze), she cannot leave her.
My artist wore jewellery throughout the video, as R&B is generally considered a
glamorous genre, however not in excess to the point of being mistaken for a hip
hop artist, in which excess jewellery connotes arrogance. My main props included
wine and wine glasses, a nice meal for 2 and a mobile phone. The meal and wine
symbolises romance and how the video is a story of romance and heartbreak
while the mobile phone incorporates the modern generation and recognises how
the younger generations relationships and communication are dependent on
mobile phones and technology.
