Eureka! Experiments abound at Evans Science Fair

Elementary school student scientists show off projects and hard work at third annual event April 16
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Trying to get plants to grow
with liquids other than water, attempting to turn on a light bulb
with two switches, kicking soccer
balls inflated with different levels
of air and measuring the difference traveled those were just
some projects on display at the
Evans Elementary School Science Fair on April 16.
The event was just one of several science fairs and science
expos that schools throughout the
district begin to hold around this
time each year, with the Evans
event in particular allowing students in kindergarten through
fifth grade to enter projects and
engage their interest in the field
of science.
For those older students in
grades four and five who entered
projects, judges from Cherokee
High School AP science classes
judged the projects on a competitive basis, with awards for the top
winners announced at the end of
the event.
For students in lower grades,
officials consisting of teachers,
faculty members, the superintendent and even Evesham Township Councilmember Debbie
Hackman went from project to
project, giving positive notes to

pitch factors to measure what the differences in energy output were. Pictured is Payton explaining his

the students for their work, with
goodie bags and homework passes available later for participating.
Evans Principal Nick DiBlasi
said the event was one of the larg-

er ones organized at the school, in

conjunction with the science
expo the following day, and
thanked the students, parents and
the judges for all their hard work.
This has been a wonderful

turnout once again, DiBlasi

said. We have such wonderful
PTA parents; they really spent a
lot of time setting up for this.
One student who worked hard
was 9-year-old third grader Grace

Garofola, who tested different

bars of soap to see which would
produce the most foam when
used.
According to Grace, her hypothesis of picking the softer,
lighter bar of soap to produce the
most foam was correct, although
the most difficult part of the project came when trying to deal with
all the soapy smells for too long.
Its really fun to be in the science fair because you get to do a
lot of stuff, Grace said.
Another student, 6-year-old
kindergartener Brock Sutphin,
did his experiment on tornados,
which he said he likes seeing in
movies, and he was able to create
the appearance of a small funnel
cloud by shaking jars of water in
specific ways.
Brocks father Bill said his son
one day came home with the science fair pamphlet, and he and
his wife decided doing the project
with Brock would be a good way
to spend time with him and be
proactive in his motivation to
learn.
I think its a great opportunity
for the kids to be creative and
learn about science at the same
time, Sutphin said.
Sutphins sentiments were also
echoed by Evesham Township

Safer walking from Inglis Gardens?

By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Kevin Fox is an Evesham resident who often walks to the Village at the Greenes shopping center on Evesboro-Medford Road to
enjoy a cup of coffee.
Fox is also visually impaired,
and must navigate two lanes of
traffic on foot across North Elmwood Road and Evesboro-Medford Road to get to that coffee, or
eat a bagel, do his banking, pick
up his dry cleaning or whatever
else he might be trying to accomplish on a given day.
The reason Fox has to routinely risk his life is because theres
no sidewalk on the east side of
North Elmwood Road at Inglis
Gardens, the independent housing complex for those with physical disabilities where Fox and
others like him reside.
It was that lack of safe travel
that brought Fox and his fellow
Inglis neighbors to the April 14

meeting of the Evesham Township Council, pleading with township officials to rectify the situation.
God forbid crossing that street
one day Im just so afraid that
somebody crazy is going run me
down, Fox said, as he explained
the situation to council and the
audience.
Jon Allen, a nine-year resident
of Inglis Gardens bound to a
wheelchair, spoke of a similar
fear, and said he found it completely ridiculous that every
time he wanted leave his apartment and venture down the street
to shop in the complex that he
was risking his life.
Its absolutely scary not knowing whether some idiot not being
safe on the roads is going to hit
me, and I dont think its fair, like
I said, that I risk being smacked
into and God knows what else by
a driver, Allen said. I have obscenities thrown at me, again, its
not fair.

bout 10 years ago, we started a

contest of sorts that helped us
give back to the community of
Haddonfield.
In the contest, we ask residents of
Haddonfield which, at the time, was
one of the only towns where we had a
newspaper to submit short essays
telling the community why a local nonprofit group deserved to receive a donation. We gathered all the nominating
essays, published them and held a community-wide vote to see who was most
deserving.
After we tallied the votes, we donated $500 to the organization that won,
and we also gave $100 to the person
who wrote that particular essay. For
us, this contest which we called The
Ray of Hope was a way for us to give
back to the community in an extremely impactful way.
The smaller organizations that re-

ceived nominations such as a Cub

Scout troop, a garden club, a senior citizens club or a book reading club
often do as much for the community as
the larger, more well-known non-profits do, but they just dont receive the
same attention, or financial backing.
Were not saying that the March of
Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits
dont support worthy causes or are not
deserving of donations; were just saying the $500 we were donating had
more of an impact on the local town
organizations, since they operate with
a much smaller budget.
Last year, as we celebrated our com-

panys 10th anniversary, with now 10

newspapers that we publish, we expanded on this idea by creating The
Ray of Hope Fund a part of the Community Foundation of South Jersey
to make similar micro-donations to
community organizations that have a
significant impact in the neighborhoods they serve.
Weve been collecting tax-deductible
donations over the last year, and are
still collecting them online at
http://elauw.it/rayofhopefund.
Now, were about ready to start distributing some of this money. But first,
we need your input.

Learn more about
little-known PMD
As a parent and sibling of a PelizauesMerzbacher affected child, I have been a
tireless advocate for this most worthy
cause. This family-driven organizations
goal is to provide awareness, family support and promote research. As a founding
member, I have served on the board for almost 20 years. During this time, I was
blessed to meet many families and their affected children who have captured my
heart, touched my soul and enriched my
life.
In all of my volunteer ventures (Archway school, St. Isaac Jogues Samaritan
group, JCC tops program and founding
member of the Tech Tot library at Githens
Center, to name a few), I rarely came to

know a group of children and families so

deserving and in need of our help as those
affected by PMD.
PMD is not fatal. Instead, it quietly deprives a childs ability to walk, talk and in
some cases swallow. Tragically, there is a
striking lack of awareness in the medical
and general population that the disease
even exists, so PMD is initially misdiagnosed as Cerebral Palsy, which is non-genetic.
Families usually share the same scenario a brother misdiagnosed as CP. It is
not until a second or third child is born
with the same symptoms that PMD is finally recognized that is if you are fortunate
enough to find a medical specialist who is
aware of PMDs existence.
Females are asymptomatic carriers of
the gene; males suffer the physical consequences. A female carrier has a 50-50

chance of passing the gene onto her son or

daughter.
If the gene is passed to a female child,
the daughter will be a carrier. If the gene is
passed to a male child, the son will be physically helpless and unable to reproduce. In
either case, this is devastating to families
who, for generations, did not know that the
PMD gene was part of their family trait. It
usually is diagnosed in a son, grandson or
cousin.
PMD research is critical because it can
solve the problem of how to myelinate the
nervous system.
The good thing about PMD research is
that the autoimmune system is not involved (as in Multiple Sclerosis) and there
are important animal model mice, rats
and dogs that have PMD. They have the

Judges impressed
with the work
of Evans students
School District Board of Education members Lisa Mansfield and
Trish Everhart, who were at the
event serving as judges.
Mansfield, who said it was her
first time judging, said she was
excited to see the various concepts and experiments the children had explored at such a
young age.
I say kudos to the teachers in

this school because theyre taking

such an interest in science and
technology and fostering that,
Mansfield said.
Everhart agreed, and said seeing the students having their interest in science sparked by their
teachers and then manifest itself
in the fair never ceased to amaze
her.
How refreshing is that, like,
what sounds do bottles make
when theyre filled with different
levels of liquid? You know, Id forgotten all that simple stuff, and
these kids were so excited explaining it all, Everhart said.

On Thursday, March 19, four

Evesham Township School District eighth-grade student leaders
assumed the role of ETSD superintendent for one day.
Together, the students and Superintendent John Scavelli visited two classrooms, toured the
transportation yard, and met
with the district cabinet to learn
about the tasks and responsibilities required to manage a dynamic school district effectively and
efficiently.
The four students each the
president of their house at DeMasi and Marlton middle schools
had a glimpse of what a leadership position in education might
entail. Justin Thach and Renee
White from DeMasi, and Kara
Rosner and Caraline Christie
from Marlton Middle, accompanied Scavelli on visitations to Patricia Girouxs kindergarten class
at Van Zant Elementary School
and Michelle Hopps and Suzanne
Delfinos first-grade class at Marlton Elementary School.
I really liked meeting the little
kids and visiting their classrooms
because it reminded me of when I
was little, said Christie, who also
told Scavelli she liked working
with kids and may want to pursue
becoming a teacher.
Theyre so happy all the
time.
After their visit to both classrooms, Scavelli spoke with the

students about the history of the
school district; he also gave them
some facts they found surprising
about the district, such as the
number of employees needed to
run ETSD: more than 900.
Being a superintendent is a
lot of work and I think people
under-appreciate Mr. Scavelli,
Thach said. Its a lot more than
looking over everything.
Scavelli, who has been in administration for 24 years and before that was a teacher, said the
annual day always is beneficial
for him as well, as it gives him a
perspective on what the student
leaders think about the way their

I look forward to this day
every year, Scavelli said. Every
project has a set of paperwork,
but its not just about what is on
paper, so its good for me to be out
in the schools. Its really interesting to hear their perspective and
what they see.
Scavelli brought his protgs
around the administration building to meet some members of his
cabinet, including Richard Dantinne, director of personnel;
Danielle Magulick, director of
curriculum and instruction; and
John Recchinti, school business
administrator. The cabinet spoke
with the students about their role
at ETSD. Finally, the students had
lunch with Scavelli and returned
to their own schools.
Scavelli said he hopes that the
students carry this experience
with them, whether they pursue a
career in education or, as he proposed, become future Board of
Education members.
For them, they dont know
whats behind the scenes, so this
is an opportunity to get a glimpse
of what has to happen for the kids
in this district to be in a classroom, from the moment a child
gets on the bus in the morning to
the custodial staff cleaning up at
the end of every school day,
Scavelli said.

Evans Elementary School hosted its Science Fair last week. Above, Sophia Evans, a 6-year-old kindergartener, did her project on whether plants would grow in liquids other than water. In addition to water,
she used liquids such as milk, soda and more to grow plants and study the results. Below, Grace Garofola,
a 9-year-old third grader, had an experiment in which she tried to determine which bars of soup would
create the most foam and why.

Continued from page 5
since the Inglis complex was first
constructed more than 10 years
ago.
Yet once again, she said she felt
her and her neighbors pleas
might fall on deaf ears.
If one of my beloved neighbors is in a critical accident, dont
bother offering your condolences, DAntonio said.
Sheryl Wolkoff, a resident who
lives near the Village at the
Greenes shopping center, said she
also recalled numerous instances
of seeing people in wheelchairs
having a difficult time trying to

navigate the road.

To say that it is dangerous for
them is a gross understatement,
Wolkoff said. It is so dangerous
for a driver, even me who knows
they are there, to see them.
Once residents had finished
speaking about their plight, township manager Tom Czerniecki
said fixing the problem wasnt as
simple as building a sidewalk
along the east side of North Elmwood, as some of those who spoke
proposed.
According to Czerniecki, about
five years ago, the township
launched an effort to secure a
grant and build such a sidewalk,
estimated to cost $300,000, but the
land where the sidewalk would be
built was delineated as wetlands
and noted as an Indian burial

ground by state historical preservation agencies, making it unworkable.

That is where the grant application died, Czerniecki said.
Mayor Randy Brown said it
was that designation, not cost,
which prevented the council from
putting a sidewalk in for the Inglis residents.
Lets say all five of us said we
want a sidewalk there, we will
spend $8 million for it, but the
state of New Jersey says you
dont get an approval to do it,
Brown said.
Brown asked that a group of
Inglis residents soon meet with
the township manager and engineer and work toward other safe
solutions the township could potentially implement.
