THE POETICS OF CRYING IN DANILOS COLLECTION

Summary
The paper aims at studying Danils Collection in order to highlight the
qualities which indicate the presence of penitential spirit in this medieval piece
of hagiography literature. Special attention is paid to the interpolated genre of
crying, as well as to the specific interweaving of praying, weeping and eulogistic
tones, which are particularly associated with the overall early Christian and
Byzantine theological tradition, and also with the philosophy of hesychasm
that had been revitalized in the Serbian territories in 14th century, and whose
prominent representative was Archbishop Danilo II. By emphasizing these
characteristics, the hybridization of the hagiographies text and the salience of
poetical elements are indicated.
