A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, beyond the
Milky Way and past the Orion Constellation there was
a great war which took place in the Heavens between
light and darkness. In order to preserve the integrity
of the "Universal Balance" and "Celestial Order",
Nzambi (God) cut the "Divine Chain" which connected
the Heavens to the Earth and closed the "Great Doors"
to the City of the Angels and the forbidden secrets of
magic fell from the great Heavens and plummeted to
the Earth and into the hands of man.
Since that time, man has had to invoke the Spirit of
Nzambi through ancient prayers and rituals. These
ancient prayers and rituals are the secret cosmic keys
of the universe which "unlock" and "open up" the
mystical doorway of the "Star Gate" into the realm of
the "Ancients".
The following book of ceremonial high magic explores
these secret keys of ancient wisdom and knowledge
which unlock the invisible doors of the "Angelic Astral
Realm" to summon the Spirit of Nzambi (the Divine
Creator) to Earth and how to manifest the sacred
energy beings from the "Angelic Astral Realm" to

There are some who believe that the ancient European
Goetia occult tradition of magic is the most powerful

it, the Quimbanda Goetia is by far the strongest form
of magic that exist and that can be found on this Earth
in this present day because it physically and
spiritually links the Heavens to the Earth.
The Quimbanda Goetia opens up a direct doorway to
the Heavens above to God's Holy Kingdom. The
Quimbanda Goetia is a particular type of magic found
and practiced by the Spiritual Practitioners of the
American Quimbanda religious tradition. It is a very
unique form of sacred biblical magic of early Jewish
and Christian mysticism which uses the divine holy
forces of the astral realm. The ancient occult magic of
the Quimbanda Goetia is found in the First Greater
Quimbanda Kingdom of the Most Glorious Archangel,
Exu Maioral of the American Quimbanda religious
tradition. This astral realm is composed of Angels,
Demons, Ancestors, Saints, and other enlightened
spiritual beings which are believed to have a direct
influence over the affairs of the living and the dead
when spiritually petitioned using the sacred prayers of
the ancient Quimbanda Goetia. The pantheon of
spirits and deities in their entirety of the American
Quimbanda religious tradition can be found within the
vast confines of the Seven Greater Quimbanda
Kingdoms which are governed over by Nzambi, the
God of the Heavens and the Earth and the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity. The Holy Quimbanda Trinity is
composed of three powerful spiritual forces that
represent the Heavens, The Cosmos, and the Earth.
These three spiritual forces are united and together

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE QUIMBANDA CREED

Like any magical tradition, it is important to
understand the spiritual concepts and the rational and
ideology behind its magical beliefs. Although it is not
mandatory to convert your magical or religious
tradition or beliefs to American Quimbanda to be able
to successfully practice the occult concepts of this
ceremonial magic book, I am including the following
information so that you can understand and
comprehend our magical tradition.
The "Quimbanda Creed" is a symbol of belief for
spiritual practioners of the American Quimbanda
religious tradition. The "Quimbanda Creed" was
spiritually revealed to the prophets of our religious
tradition through the Divine Grace of Nzambi and it
was introduced and acknowledged as a Divine Holy
Scripture in the year 2003 by the American
Candomble Church, because it ultimately explains the
Church's gnostic teachings about Nzambi and the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity. The "Quimbanda Creed" also
affirms our religious beliefs and doctrine about Divine
Intervention and Divine Intercession of the
pantheon of Holy Ones (spiritual beings & angelic
beings) which make up the hierarchy of our religious
beliefs and who are manifestations of Nzambis
Divine Grace. By understanding the "Quimbanda
Creed", the spiritual practitioner will be able to open
up the realms of the astral world and become the "key
to open up the doorway" to the magical mysteries of
the Quimband Goetia.

THE QUIMBANDA CREED PRAYER

We believe in Nzambi, the one true God, the Father,
the Almighty, the maker of the great Heavens and the
Earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in
Nzambi Ntoto, the God who touched and walked the
Earth and became man. We believe in the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity and the Seven Greater Quimbanda
Kingdoms and the Seven Lesser Quimbanda
Kingdoms who are the sacred light of Nzambi and give
light to us. We believe that only through Nzambi all
things were made and only through Nzambi all souls
are saved. For all of us and for our salvation Nzambi
came down from the great Heavens: by the power of
the Holy Spirit, He was born and became man. For our
sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He
suffered, died, and was buried and his spirit descended
into the Great Abyss and conquered darkness. On the
third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Sacred
and Holy Quimbanda Scriptures: He ascended into
Heaven and is seated over the mysteries of the
Universe. We believe that Nzambi will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and his
Quimbanda Kingdom will have no end. We believe in
the Holy Spirit of Nzambi, the Quimbanda Trinity, the
Seven Greater Quimbanda Kingdoms, the Seven
Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms and the ancestors who
are kneeling at his feet in glory and light. We believe
in the communion of our ancestors and the Divine
intercession of the Holy Ones from the Seven Greater
Quimbanda Kingdoms and the Seven Lesser
Quimbanda Kingdoms. We believe that we were
chosen by Nzambi to deliver the Divine Word to His

children here on Earth and that His Kingdom will

have no end. We believe that all men were created
equal. We believe that we are a Holy Temple of
Nzambi and that the Holy Spirit of Nzambi resides
within each and every one of us. We believe that
Nzambi bestowed upon mankind the gift of "free will"
and "freedom of choice" to choose the direction of our
sacred journey here on Earth. We believe that the
Kingdom of Nzambi on Earth will have no end. We
believe that through the Divine intercession of the
Holy Ones of the Seven Greater Quimbanda Kingdoms
and the Seven Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms, Nzambi
is worshiped and glorified. We believe that Nzambi
has spoken through the Prophets of the American
Quimbanda religious tradition. We believe in one,
Gnostic Holy Temple of Nzambi. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of our failings. We believe
that only through the Divine Sacrament of Baptism
that we can reconnect and reconcile to the Holy Spirit
of Nzambi through divine restoration. We believe in
the resurrection of the living and the resurrection of
the dead through the Divine Sacrament of Baptism.
We believe in the sacred universal order of man and
God through the restoration of the seven degrees of
universal enloightenment which connect the spirit and
soul of man to the divine universe. We believe that the
mysteries of Nzambi are Universal and his sacred
mysteries found throughout the great cosmos. We
believe in the sacred principles of brotherhood, love
and universal harmony and balance. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to

RELIGIOUS LINEAGES OF THE AFRO-BRAZILIAN

QUIMBANDA TRADITION
The country of Brazil is the religious and true
historical beginnings for the present day American
Quimbanda religious tradition. The American
Quimbanda religious tradition traces its historical
origins directly to the African Congo and to the First
Prophet of our religious tradition, Nzinga a Nkuwu
who was the first royal Congo King to be baptized into
the mysteries of Gnostic Christianity in the year 1485
by Jesuit Priests and the Knights Templar. During the
Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade of the 1500's, various types
of Congolese religions and magical traditions were
transported to the New World with the African peoples
who were brought to work as slaves on the Portuguese
sugarcane and coffee plantations in Brazil. Along with
this massive migration of displaced peoples also came
along a group of ancient mystics, the Sephardic Jews.
The Sephardic Jews traveled to the New World to
establish business commerce along the rich trade
routes in various sea ports in the New World and also
to escape religious persecution which was beginning to
take place in Europe at that time. The mystical
teachings of the ancient Kabbalah was brought to the
New World by the Sephardic Jews which had a great
influence in the shaping of the present day American
Quimbanda religious tradition. As a result of this very
rich cultural exchange which took place between
various cultures and religious traditions in the New
World, various forms of Afro-Brazilian spiritualism
and Quimbanda began to develope and evolved over a
500 year period in Brazil. The Quimbanda religion is

still evolving and its magical mysteries can be found

being practiced in every corner of the world. All of the
following are various Afro-Brazilian religious lineages
of the Quimbanda religious tradition found in the
United States, Brazil and the liturgical differences and
ritual liturgy differences which exist between all of
them. Ritual liturgy is the customary public worship
done by a specific religious group, according to its
particular traditions.

QUIMBANDA PURA (Brazil)

The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Pura religious
tradition is usually associated with the Afro-Brazilian
Umbanda religious tradition. Umbanda is an AfroBrazilian religious tradition that blends African
religions with Catholicism and European Spiritism.
Umbanda is related to, and has many similarities
with, other Afro-Brazilian religions like Candombl
and Quimbanda. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Pura
religious tradition believes that the pantheon of spirits
called Exu posses a duality of the balance of light
supernatural forces and dark supernatural forces. The
philosophy of the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Pura
religious tradition believe that some of the Exus are
messengers of the African Orishas (Saints) and also
messengers of the Christian Church's belief in the
malevolent forces of the Devil. The initiates of the
Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Pura religious tradition
believes that the spiritual forces (gods) of Exu and
Pomba Gira are usually associated are spirits of
darkness that need to evolve by doing good and
charitable deeds. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Pura
religious tradition does not make or prepare the Congo
spirit vessels known as "Nganga". The Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda Pura religious tradition uses primarily
consecrated religious statues of the spirits of Exu and
Pomba Gira.

The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda d' Angola religious
tradition is an independent religious tradition which is
not associated with any type of religious philosophy or
theology of the Afro-Brazilian Umbanda religious
tradition. Both anthropologist and initiates of the
Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda d' Angola religious
tradition believe that this particular tradition may be
the oldest line of the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
religion. Although it may be the oldest and considered
the "original tree" of the "Quimbanda Tree of
Knowledge" which gave birth to all of the other AfroBrazilian Quimbanda religious traditions, in both
Brazil and the United States, it has been influenced by
various magical traditions and esoteric beliefs and
contains very strong elements of Freemasonry,
Ceremonial High Magic and European Witchcraft. One
of the most obvious signs of a European connection the
influence of Ceremonial High Magic is the magical
ceremonial sword (Athame) in its religious ceremonies.
An Athame is a ceremonial dagger used in ceremonial
high magic rituals to cast a magic circle by the
magician. It is the main ritual implement or magical
tool among several used in the religion of Wicca, and is
also used in various other neopagan witchcraft
traditions. The historical magical usage of the Athame
as a magical tool dates back to the Middle Ages to
various magical occult Grimoires of "Solomonic Goetia
Rites".The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda d' Angola
religious tradition believe that the pantheon of spirits
called Exu and Pomba Gira are highly evolved
spiritual forces that govern over the African Orishas

(Saints) and are only subject of being governed over by

the Nkisi (Congo Spirits). The spirit mysteries of the
Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Quimbanda d' Angola
religious tradition are kept inside of spirit vessels
known as "Nganga".

The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda d' Angola religious
tradition is structured and organized in its "Rites of
Passage" initiation ceremony. In the Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda d' Angola religious tradition there are 9
levels of initiations.

QUIMBANDA MALEI (Brazil)

The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Malei religious
tradition. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Malei
religious tradition believes that the spirits of Exu and
Pomba Gira are Nkisi (Congo) Spirits and are
manifestations of the Congo Spirit of the Kingdom of
the Congo called Aluvaia/ Bombojila. Aluvaia is seen
as the male aspect of the spirit and Bombojila is seen
as the female aspect of this spirit. The spirit mysteries
of the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Malei religious
tradition are kept inside of spirit vessels known as
"Nganga". The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Malei
religious tradition is known magically as the most
powerful of all of the other Quimbanda religious
traditions found in the present day country of Brazil.

levels of initiations.

QUIMBANDA KI'UMBANDA (Brazil)

The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Ki'umbanda religious
tradition. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Ki'umbanda
religious tradition is influenced by European
Mysticism and Sabbatic Witchcraft. The Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda Ki'umbanda religious tradition is the
newest form of Quimbanda to have been formed in the
Country of Brazil.
The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Ki'umbanda religious
Quimbanda Ki'umbanda religious tradition there are
several levels of initiations.

QUIMBANDA GNOSTIC AMERICAN RITE

(United States)
The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic American Rite
is an independent religious tradition which is not
associated with any of type religious philosophy or
tradition. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic
American Rite tradition was brought to the United
States in the early 1900's by the De Bourbon Montenegro Family from Brazil. The Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda Gnostic American Rite tradition is also
called the American Quimbanda religious tradition.
This particular Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda religious
tradition was founded in 1864 in Rio De Janeiro,
Brazil by Matilda De Bourbon-Montenegro and later
brought to the United States by various members of
the De Bourbon Montenegro Family during the early
1900's to the 1980's. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
Gnostic American Rite tradition trances its historical
Gnostic tradition to the African Congo to the
Congolese King, Nkuwo a Nzinga who became the
ruling Congolese monarch to be baptized into the
Roman Catholic Christian Mysteries and also into the
Gnostic Mysteries of the Knights Templar in the year
1485. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic
American Rite tradition has been influenced by
various magical traditions and esoteric beliefs and
contains very strong elements of early Jewish &
Christian Gnostic religious beliefs, Freemasonry
beliefs and practices, Ceremonial High Magic and
European
Witchcraft
beliefs.
One of the most obvious signs of a European

connection is the strong influence of the usage of

various magical tools such as chalices, magic wands
and athames. Another obvious sign of a European
connection is in its incorporation of the Solomonic
Goetia magical occult tradition dating back to the
Middle Ages and the time of King Solomon.

every spiritual force (spirits/gods/goddesses) found on
Earth and the vast universe. The spirit mysteries of
the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic American Rite
religious tradition are kept inside of spirit vessels
known as "Nganga". In the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
Gnostic American Rite tradition, there is no ritual
animal blood sacrifices performed. The only offerings
made to the Quimbanda pantheon of spirits is that of
spiritual such as flowers, minerals, crystals, foods and

tradition. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic
Spiritualist Rite tradition was founded by Carlos
Antonio De Bourbon Galdiano Montenegro and Chaz
Swayne in the year 2010 in the United States. The
Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic Spiritualist Rite
bases its traditions on the original religious structure
of the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic American
Rite brought to the United States by the De BourbonMontenegro Family. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
Gnostic Spiritualist Rite tradition is also called the
American Quimbanda Spiritualist tradition. The
initiates of the American Quimbanda Spiritualist
tradition believe in self-initiation and both solitary
and group religious rituals and ceremonies. The AfroBrazilian Quimbanda Gnostic Spiritualist Rite
tradition has been influenced by various magical
traditions and esoteric beliefs and contains very strong
elements of early Jewish & Christian Gnostic religious
beliefs, Freemasonry beliefs and practices, Ceremonial
High Magic and European Witchcraft beliefs. One of
the most obvious signs of a European connection is the
strong influence of the usage of various magical tools
such as chalices, magic wands and athames. Another
obvious sign of a European connection is in its
incorporation of the Solomonic Goetia magical occult
tradition dating back to the Middle Ages and the time

Gnostic Spiritualist Rite tradition trances its historical
Gnostic tradition to the African Congo to the
Congolese King, Nkuwo a Nzinga who became the
ruling Congolese monarch to be baptized into the

Gnostic Mysteries of the Knights Templar in the year
1485. The Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Gnostic
Spiritualist Rite tradition believes that the pantheon
of spirits called Exu and Pomba Gira are highly
evolved spiritual forces that govern over the African
Orishas (Saints) and over every spiritual force
(spirits/gods/goddesses) found on Earth and the vast
universe. The Spiritual Practitioners of the AfroBrazilian Quimbanda Gnostic Spiritualist Rite are
mainly concerend with ceremonial magic and ritual
prayers of positive affirmations. There are no spirit

The Palo Quimbanda religious tradition is an
independent religious tradition which is not associated
with any type of religious philosophy or theology of the
Afro-Brazilian Umbanda religious tradition. The Palo
Quimbanda religious tradition was born in the United
States in the early 1980's in the De BourbonMontenegro Family Munanzo in Los Angeles,
California and is a mixture of Afro-Craibbean Palo
Mayombe and Afro-Brazilian religious traditions. The
Palo Quimbanda religious tradition came into
existance as initiates of the Afro-Caribbean Palo
Mayombe religious traditions began initiating into the
mystyeries of Afro - Brazilian Quimbanda. The Palo
Quimbanda religious tradition is a new Congolese
tration that has incorported the myseiries of the AfroBrazilian Quimbanda religious tradition within the
mystery of the Congolese knkeieis. Gnostic American
Rite tradition is also called the American Quimbanda
religious tradition. The Palo Quimbanda religious
tradition believes that the entire universe is governed
over by the powerful spirits Exu Rei (Male Exu) and
Pomba Gira Reina (Female Exu). The Palo Quimbanda
religious tradition is based on ancestral veneration
which is found within the realm of the Congo spirit
dieties (Nkisi). This very mysterious realm is governed
over by a very powerful spirit known as Exu Gira
Mundo (Lucero Vira Mundo). The pantheon of Congo
spirit dieties (Nkisi) are represented in the form of
spirit vessels (ngangas) and the Nkisi Spirits work
underneath his guidence. It believes that spirits and

tradition are kept inside of spirit vessels known as

spirit mysteries from both the Afro-Caribbean Palo
Mayombe religious tradition as well as the spirit

The Palo Quimbanda religious tradition follows the
Afro-Caribbean initiation process of the Palo Mayombe
religious tradition along with a blend of Afro-Brazilian
spiritualism.

MAGICAL TRADITIONS DERIVED FROM THE

QUIMBANDA RELIGION
The sacred journey of the Congolese religious
traditions and magical beliefs which began long before
the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade of the 1500's is one of
epic proportions as it relates to the present day
magical practices as found and practiced in Brazil, the
Caribbean and the United States. Early anthopological
and historical evidence suggest that the magical
practices which presently exists and are popularized
today in the Caribbean and the New World we deeply
influenced by direct contact of the Congolese Gnostic
Quimbanda religious practices and beliefs. The
Quimbanda religious traditions were carried over to
Brazil not only by Congolese people who would work
the Portuguese sugar cane and coffee plantations, but
also by Sephardic Jews who were practicing an ancient
magical tradition known as the Kabbalah. The
Sephardic Jews were working as merchants in the
trade industry in trade centers of Northern Africa and
also along the trade routes along the Congo River in
the Africa Congo. In fact, evidence of Gnostic beliefs
can be found in the first established Jewish Sephardic
Temples known as Synagogues in Brazil. A Synagogue
is a Jewish house of prayer. Synagogues are
consecrated spaces that can be used only for the
purpose of prayer. The first synagogue of the western
hemisphere was established in Brazil in the 1500's. In
Brazil, the Portuguese Jews call the synagogue an
esnoga. It was within these Jewish mystic centers that
many of the Gnostic magical beliefs associated with
the magical biblical tradition of the Kaballah started

intermingling with the Gnostic religious beliefs of the

Congolese and as a result, the Quimbanda religious
tradition started to take on a unique form of New
World magical religious tradition and that would
emerge as an independent magical religious belief
some 500 years later. Many of the Sephardic Jewish
Mystics who traveled to the New World did so to
escape political and religious tensions which began
happening in Europe in the 1500's in a time known as
the "Inquisition". The major targets of the Portuguese
Inquisition were those who had converted from
Judaism to Catholicism, the Conversos, also known as
New Christians or Marranos, who were suspected of
secretly practising Judaism. Many of these were
originally Spanish Jews, who had left Spain for
Portugal. As in Spain, the Inquisition was subject to
the authority of the King. It was headed by a Grand
Inquisitor or General Inquisitor, named by the Pope
but selected by the king, always from within the royal
family. The Grand Inquisitor would later nominate
other inquisitors. In Portugal, the first Grand
Inquisitor was Cardinal Henry, who would later
become king. There were Courts of the Inquisition in
Lisbon, Coimbra, and vora, and for a short time
(1541 until c. 1547) also in Porto, Tomar and Lamego.
It held its first auto-da-f in Portugal in 1540. Like the
Spanish Inquisition, it concentrated its efforts on
rooting out those who had converted from other faiths
(overwhelmingly Judaism) but did not adhere to the
strictures of Catholic orthodoxy. The Portuguese
Inquisition expanded its scope of operations from
Portugal to Portugal's colonial possessions, including
Brazil, Cape Verde, and Goa, where it continued

investigating and trying cases based on supposed

breaches of orthodox Roman Catholicism until 1821.
Under Joo III, the activity of the courts was extended
to the censure of books, as well as undertaking cases of
divination, witchcraft and bigamy. Originally aimed at
religious matters, the Inquisition had an influence on
almost every aspect of Portuguese life - political,
cultural, and social. During the Inquisition, many of
the Sephardic Jewish Mystics fled to other parts of the
New World along with their mystical magical beliefs.
In each of the places that the Sephardic Jewish
Mystics traveled to and established their homes, they
brought with them many of the magical mystic
teachings of the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda religious
tradition. As these Sephardic Jewish Mystics began
interacting with the religious traditions of the African
peoples who had been brought to work as slaves in the
British colonies, the French colonies and the Spanish
colonies, the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda religious
tradition started to influrnce the ancient practices of
these African slave populations who had been brought
to work as slaves on the sugar cane and coffee
plantations. The African slave population in the New
World consisted of various African peoples from
various African Tribes and each with their own
religious and magical traditions eventually forming
the following magical traditions as we know them to be
in this present day. In the West Indies and the Island
of Jamaica the Afro-Brazilian religious tradition
merged with various African traditions and Christian
traditions from the Angelican Church and became
known as Obeah. The magical tradition of Obeah
would eventually spread to the country of Belize

among the Garufuno people where it is alos known as

Obeah. The Obeah tradition would eventuually spread
to the countries of Guatemala, Cuatemaco, Mexico,
Nicaragua and Honduras along the "Misquito Coast"
in a region known as Blue Fields. The Afro-Brazilian
religious tradition also traveled to the Island of
Trinidad where it became known as the cult of the
"Shango Baptist". The Afro-Brazilian religious
tradition also traveled to the Island country of Haiti
and the Domincan Republic. In Haiti it mixed with the
French traditions of the Catholic Church and became
known as Voudoun. In the Domincan Republic it
mixed with the Spanish Traditions and French
religious traditions became known as the 21 Divisions.
The Afro-Brazilian religious tradition also traveled to
the Island country of Cuba. The magical mysteries of
the Afro-Cuban traditions of Palo Mayombe, Palo
Monte and Kimbisa are the direct result of the AfroBrazilian
Quimbanda religious
experience of
enlightenment. The Afro-Brazilian religious tradition
also found its way to the American city of New Orleans
where it merged with various African traditions and
Christian traditions The magical mysteires of the
American Voodoo and American Hoodoo traditions are
both a direct result of the Quimbanda experience of
enlightenement.
In the early 19th century, the
mysteries of the modern day Quimbanda religion was
brought to the United States from Brazil in its original
form in the early 1900's to New Bedford,
Massachusetts by the De Bourbon-Montenegro Family.

Ceremonial magic is practiced in many cultures, and
attempts to understand, experience and influence the
world in a manner akin to that of religion.The concept
of magic as a separate category to that of religion first
appeared in Judaism, which derided as magic the
practices of pagan worship designed to appease and
receive benefits from gods other than Jehovah. Magic
is often viewed with suspicion by the wider
community, and is sometimes practiced in isolation
and secrecy. The belief in and the practice of
Ceremonial magic has been present since the earliest
human cultures and continues to have an important
religious and medicinal role in many cultures today.
"Magic is central not only in primitive societies but in
high cultural societies as well." Modern Western
magicians generally state magic's primary purpose to
be personal spiritual growth. Modern perspectives on
the theory of magic broadly follow two major views.
The first sees magic as a result of a universal
sympathy within the universe, where if something is
done here a result happens somewhere else. The other
view sees magic as collaboration with spirits who
cause the effect. A magician is any practitioner of
magic; therefore a magician may be a specialist or a
common practitioner, even if he or she does not

through family or apprenticeships, though in some
cultures it may also be purchased. The information

must also possess certain magical objects, traits or life
experiences in order to be a magician. A variety of
personal traits may be credited to magical power,
though frequently they are associated with an unusual
birth into the world. Certain post-birth experiences
may also be believed to convey magical power. For
example a person's survival of a near-death illness
may be taken as evidence of their power as a healer.
Initiations are perhaps the most commonly used
ceremonies to establish and to differentiate magicians
from common people. In these rites the magician's
relationship to the supernatural and his entry into a
closed professional class is established, often through
rituals that simulate death and rebirth into a new life.
The belief that one can influence supernatural powers,
by prayer, sacrifice or invocation goes back to
prehistoric religion and is present in early records
such as the Egyptian pyramid texts and the Indian
Vedas. I was reluctant to write a book about the sacred
mysteries of the Quimbanda Goetia because the
information is not made available to outsiders who are
not formally initiated at our Afro-Brazilian American
Quimbanda Temple, but after doing some research
from other books about the Goetia magical tradition as
well as from information that was available on the
internet, I decided that I was being spiritually

obligated to write down these sacred American

Quimbanda Goetia mysteries in a series of books so
that the entire world could begin to realize the
importance of these sacred magical mysteries and
start to benefit from them. That is why I decided to
share these very historical and scare occult mysteries
with the world and with you today in this ceremonial
high magic book which contains simple rituals that
anyone can do and get fast positive results. The
information that I was able to gather and read about
in many books and the internet is all wrong, in my
professional spiritual opinion. When I carefully read
the available material on the Goetia spirits which
included many well-known authors, I thought to
myself, this information is inaccurate and has even
been presented many of times in a backwards or
reverse format that instead of helping people in their
lives to resolve their everyday problems, it more than
likely worsened their lives. I am sure many of you
have heard of the warnings about working with the 72
Goetia Spirits of King Solomon and how horrible they
can be. Well these warnings are correct, if you do not
follow the information of the magic rituals "step by
step" that I provide and present in this book. This is
one the biggest common mistakes by the misinformed
about the Goetia Spirits that has been published in
books and that is widely accepted by many occult
groups claiming to have the true occult mysteries of
the Goetia Spirits is that they refer to the Goetia
Spirits as demons, but they are not. This very "gross
error" in the misinterpretation of the spiritual
classification of the actual spirits has in past times
sparked fear in the minds of society. Because of that

unjustly accused of committing just about every known
atrocity from the past history of mankind. The 72

technology and have also taught man how to have a

I am not going to go into detail about why they are not
or should be not classified as demons in this
introduction, I will address this issue in a later
chapter that is sure to spark a great debate among
present day practitioners of the Goetia magical occult
arts. That is why I have decided to write and publish a
series of various Limited Edition Books about the
American Quimbanda Goetia magical religious
tradition and make them available to the occult
community and to the general public to correct all of
the misinformation that presently exists about the
Goetia Spirits and about how to successfully do their
magical rituals without the fear of spiritual
repercussion from these very powerful ancient spirits
of the astral realm from the Greater Quimbanda
Kingdom of the Most Glorious Angel, Exu Maioral. The
methods of how to do Quimbanda Goetia spiritual
experiments that I will teach you in this book have
been proven to get individuals the results that they
are looking for by working with the powerful Astral
Exu Goetia Spirits. Spiritual Experiments using the
powerful magical mysteries of the Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda Goetia are very different from that of the

classified as necromancy, the primary difference

spirit vessels which contain the actual mysteries of
powerful spirits which are more commonly known as
Nkisi. The vessel which houses these holy spirit relics
is more commonly known as an Nganga. It must be
remembered that our historical tradition of the AfroBrazilan Gnostic Quimbanda religious tradition is
derived from the African Congo magical tradition and
therefore uses many different types of holy spirit relics
in the magical application of the sacred occult black
arts. In the European derived Goetia magical
traditions there is an absence of the actual spirit
mysteries and the Goetia Spirits are invoked through
the usage of ancient prayers, magical incantations and
spirit sigils. A spirit sigil or (spirit seal) is a symbol
used in magic. The term has usually referred to a type
of pictorial signature of a particular spirit, demon or
other entity. Both the European derived Goetia
magical system and the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
Goetia magical system use sigils in its rituals. In the
Afro-Brazilian Goetia magical tradition these powerful
Astral Spirits can be invoked and summoned in the
same manner as those practiced by magicians
practicing the European derived Goetia system or they
can place the sacred spirit vessels within the sacred
ceremonial ritual area to enhance the magical
effectiveness of the Quimbanda Goetia magical ritual.

between the two Goetia derived magical traditions
that makes our magical occult practice and it's sacred
mysteries, unique, very scarce, rare and powerful.
Although there are many forms of the Afro-Brazilian
Quimbanda religious tradition found and practiced in
Brazil, the occult methods and religious philosophy of
our magical practice of the Quimbanda Goetia and the
orthodox Gnostic Quimbanda religious tradition are
only found within our temple. If you have not been
formally initiated into the sacred mysteries of AfroBrazilian Quimbanda then you will not be using these
holy spirit relics in the spiritual experiments
presented here in this ceremonial magic book, however
if you have already been presented the appropriate
holy spirit relics in a vessel then you will have the
option of doing so. Either way, the spiritual
experiments presented here in this book are primarily
intended for those individuals who have not been
formally inititaed into the Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
religious tradition. The Congo Spirits of the dead who
make a pact with the living are collectively called
Nkisi. The spirits come from the world of the dead
and manifest through the Nganga. The Nganga is
usually constructed inside of a cast iron cauldron or
even inside of a clay pot. The Nganga is a miniature
world and a doorway to the supernatural. The Nganga
is the home of the Nkisi (Congo Spirit) who rests
inside waiting until summoned by its owner. The spirit
can only manifest to its owner who has made an
eternal pact with the world of the spirits that will last
until the physical death of its owner. The purpose of
the spirit is to serve and protect its master by any

means necessary. In the World of the Congo Spirits,

good and evil are looked upon equally and weighed the
same. That is, there is no distinct classification
between good and evil as the Western World believes.
Where do these spirits come from and why are they
here? There are spirits everywhere around us.
Everything, location and thing found in this world and
the cosmos contain some kind of spiritual energy and
life force. There are pantheons of spiritual entities also
known as restless spirits that for some reason have
not been able to pass through light dimensions and are
trapped here inside of our world until they complete
their task or their destiny. There are many different
types of spiritual entities which exist and can be found
in the mountains, forest, stones, trees, rivers, oceans
and other far away locations such as the planets and
the stars. Spirits are pure unseen and invisible energy
that can manifest in our physical world. Through the
use of ancient magical necromancy incantations and
ancient magical sorcery formulas and preparations an
individual can tap into this energy and stabilize it by
undergoing a series of initiations into this mysterious
world which will allow them to walk with authority
and respect in the realm of the spirits. In the African
Congo religious tradition of spirituality, initiations and
pacts with the spirits are achieved through a series of
very ancient initiations that link the physical
dimension which we live in with the outer dimension,

known as Quimbandeiros. The word Quimbandeiro
refers to an individual who possesses great "occult
knowledge" and supernatural power to talk and to

reasons such as to heal individuals from disease,
sickness, power and protection against the evil eye and
entities more commonly known as demons. The
practice of working with the spirits of the dead is
called necromancy. King Solomon, one of the greatest
and most famous individuals of world biblical history

African Diaspora to the New World, these initiations
remained almost intact with a few variations and some
syncretism and the incorporation of indigenous Indian
and various early Jewish & Christian elements.The

that we are truly Nzambi's chosen people and that I
was chosen by Him and the Holy Quimbanda Trinity
to be the sacred custodian of these ancient occult
truths which connect man to the great cosmos and to
the Heaven's above and lead this very sacred magical
tradition into the 21st Century. There is no doubt that
within the confines of our particular magical religious
tradition that we have something that no other
magical religious has and that we have something that
everybody wants to know about and to discover and

practitioners from the Caribbean and Brazil,

The Congo temple for practitioners of all Congo
derived religious traditions is called Munanzo.
Munanzo means "The House of the Lord", Nzambi. The
Munanzo is the place where all sacred rituals of the
Congo derived religious tradition take place along with
all of the sacred initiations that make up the sacred
rituals of this beautiful tradition. This short article
will address the Gnostic meaning of the American
Quimbanda Congo Temple in ritual importance. As
time moves forward there are many esoteric meanings
that existed and were hidden within the tradition that
many of our spiritual practitioners do not really know
about nor understand the true meaning behind our
sacred religious rituals and about the Temple
(Munanzo) were these sacred rites of passage take
place. It is for that very reason, I find the need to write
as many books as possible to educate all individuals
about our magical and religious philosophy and about
the sacred mysteries that are shrouded behind the
meaning of words such as "Munanzo". Although, no
one is really at fault, it is an example of just how many
of the hidden esoteric mysteries over time have been

biblical origins to the year 1485 when the First King of
the Congo was formally baptized into the mysteries of
Roman Catholicism by Jesuit Priest and the last
remaining members of the Knights Templar. Because
of this influence, the Catholic Church of the Congo has
always held very deeply within the ancient mysteries
of early Jewish & Christian Gnosticism and has placed
a large emphasis on ancestral veneration even to this
present day. Every American Quimbanda Munanzo is
(becomes) the representation of Nzambi's (God) Holy
Temple here on Earth and for the moment of ritual
and the act of sacred invocations and evocations in the
shrines area of the Holy of the Holies, the magic circle
becomes in reality the mystical doorway, a gateway to
the Heavens, a spiritual vortex that will remain open
as long as the temple is consecrated, sanctified and
Holy. The spirit vessel (nganga) becomes the Holy Ark
of the Covenant. Every American Quimbanda temple
mimics the very sacred Holy Temple of God in the
Heavens which was constructed by the ancient king
Solomon on Earth. For this very reason, the American
Quimbanda religious temple since 1864 and all of the
internal workings and even the set up (sacred floor
plan) and its architecture must always duplicate Gods
Holy Temple in Heaven in honor and reverence to Him
and also to King Solomon who was given the blessings
so long to recreate God's Holy dwelling place in the

Heavens here on Earth. When we say in our ritual

prayers, As it is above So shall it be below, we are
ritually professing our faith and beliefs that
everything that exists here on Earth is just a mirror
reflection of what exists in the great Heavens. For
those initiated individuals who are practicing the
orthodox version of the American Quimbanda religious
tradition in its oldest and original form, the temple
altar is always set towards the east. In every temple
the ritual of consecration of every new temple or even
an American Quimbanda shrine area in your home
also beings with the consecration and the laying of the
foundation of the corner store. This is done and
performed though an elaborate ritual ceremony. The
ritual lying of the corner stone was performed during
its construction in the Temple of Solomon by the
Master Craftsman Builder and legend of the
Freemasonry Order, Hiram Abif. In the year 1872,
Henri Luis De Bourbon-Montenegro brought the Free
Mason ritual elements and Gnosticism into our
tradition and where it has remained to this present
day. The American Quimbanda temple has many other
esoteric and symbolic hidden meanings including those
that are held with our Seven Degrees of Universal
Mysticism Studies Program. Many people have
attempted to reproduce a magical system like that of
the "Great" King Solomon. Some of them were very
successful, but many have failed to gain a level of
power that King Solomon had. Until recent times,
there has been much debate by occult historians about
which magical traditions or secret occult fraternities
still retain the original occult elements of this very
powerful form of ancient biblical mysticism. Although

Solomon's magical powers are just a legend, the fact is,
that it is not.

spiritually manifest.

Quimbanda tradition, karma or divine justice is an

"Universal Laws" of cause and effect. To understand
this concept it is important for all individuals
practicing magic to completely understand the
importance of having good spiritual character and
good integrity.
In our Gnostic Quimbanda religious tradition, the
importance of having good character and integrity are
one of the most important aspects of an individual's
spirituality. Having good character and integrity are
key elements to achieving success in this lifetime. By
mastering and incorporating these key elements into

without limitation. The spiritual concept of good
character and integrity are the sacred keys which the
Spirit Exu bestows upon mankind to be able to unlock

power to do this because Nzambi gave each and
everyone us freedom of choice. This concept of freedom
of choice is the greatest gift that Nzambi bestowed
upon mankind. The freedom to decide our own destiny
and how we define our personal and spiritual self also
includes the concepts of good character and integrity.
The crossroads of these spiritual concepts is called
freedom of choice, where the Spirit Exu meets each of
us as we begin a new day. You alone have the power to
change your destiny by implementing these very
important spiritual concepts that Nzambi placed
inside of each and every one of us. Take responsibility
for your choices and make the necessary changes in
your life to reflect the Divine Light of Nzambi.

no such thing as right or wrong choices, only
consequences for the choices that we made at the
crossroads

WHAT IS GNOSTICISM?
Gnosticism is a term for a set of religious beliefs and
spiritual practices found among some early Christian
and non-Christian groups called "gnostic" ("knowing").
In the past many scholars believed that gnosticism
pre-dated Christianity, but now it is generally
accepted that gnosticism developed into a coherent
movement.
Gnosticism encompasses a very wide range of beliefs
and is better viewed as a collection of religions sharing
some common themes rather than as one specific
religion. There are two basic components to beliefs
commonly labeled as Gnostic, although the importance
of one over the other can vary immensely. The first is
gnosis and the second is dualism.
Gnosis is a Greek word for knowledge, and in
Gnosticism (and religion in general) it refers to
awareness, experience and knowledge of the presence
of God. It also frequently refers to self-awareness, as
one realizes and recognizes the divine spark within
their mortal shell.
Dualism, roughly speaking, posits the existence of two
creators. The first is a god of goodness and pure
spirituality (often called the Godhead), while the
second (often called the demiurge) is the creator of the
physical world, which has trapped divine souls in
mortal form. In some cases, the demiurge is a god in
and of itself, equal and opposite to the Godhead. In
other cases, the demiurge is a being of lesser (although

still considerable) standing. The demiurge might be a

specifically evil being, or it might simply be imperfect,
just as its creation is imperfect. In both cases, Gnostics
worship only the Godhead. The demiurge is not worthy
of such reverence. Some Gnostics were highly ascetic,
rejecting the material word as strongly as possible.
This is not the approach of all Gnostics, although all
are ultimately spiritually focused on gaining
understanding of and unification with the Godhead.
Much (but not all) of Gnosticism today is rooted in
Judeo-Christian sources. Gnostics man or may not also
identify themselves as Christian, depending on the
amount of overlap between their own beliefs and
Christianity. Gnosticism certainly does not require
belief in Jesus Christ, although many Gnostics include
him in their theology. Gnostic thought had a profound
impact on the development of Christianity, which
traditionally sees a struggle between an imperfect
material world and a perfect spiritual one. However,
early Church fathers rejected Gnosticism overall as
compatible with Christianity, and they rejected the
books containing the most Gnostic ideas when the
Bible was assembled. Various Gnostic groups have
emerged within the Christian community throughout
history only to be branded heretical by orthodox
authorities. The most famous are the Cathars, whom
the Albigensian Crusade was called against in 1209.
Manichaeism, the faith of St. Augustine before he
converted, was also Gnostic, and Augustine's writings
underscored the struggle between spiritual and
material. Because the Gnostic movement encompasses
such a wide range of beliefs, there are no specific books
that all Gnostic study. However, the Corpus

Hermeticum (from which Hermeticism derives) and

Gnostic Gospels are common sources. The accepted
Scriptures of Judaism and Christianity are also often
read by Gnostics, although they are generally taken
more metaphorically and allegorically than literally.

The term Quimbanda Goetia is a word used to describe
a specific type of magical practice within the AfroBrazilian
religious
tradition
of
Quimbanda.
Quimbanda Goetia is also referred to by magical
practitioners of this powerful form of occult magic as
"Astral Quimbanda" or "High Magic Quimbanda". The
magical practice of the Quimbanda Goetia is found
within the powerful realm of the Astral Exu Goetia
Spirits which are found within the realms of The First
Greater Quimbanda Kingdom of The Most Glorious
Angel, Exu Maioral. In the practice of Quimbanda
Goetia, the magician uses a series of magical
invocations to connect himself to the cosmic universal
astral world to summon a pantheon of Angelic beings
and the 72 Astral Exu Goetia Spirits to come forth
from their dimension into our physical dimension. The
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition is very different
from the traditional Goetia magical traditions that are
presently found and practiced in modern times. The
difference lies in the religious theology of the
Quimbanda religious tradition in its heavenly order
from above (Heaven) to below (Earth). The other
significant difference between traditional Goetia
magical traditions of Europe and that of the AfroBrazilian American Quimbanda Goetia magical
tradition system is in the specific act of summoning
and commanding the astral Spirits to manifest and to
do one's bidding. In the traditional Goetia magical
traditions, the magician invokes the astral spirits or
demons to appear and then by using a series of
prayers, the magician demands or forces these astral

spirits who are often times seen as malevolent forces

to do what they want. In the Afro-Brazilian American
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition, the magician
invokes and summons the astral spirits to Earth and
to the ritual area and then through a series of divine
prayers, makes their spiritual request and petitions.
Religious practitioners of the Afro-Brazilian American
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition see themselves
aligned with the astral spirits to bring about harmony
and balance. In the Afro-Brazilian American
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition, the astral spirits
are seen as benign and as good rather than demonic
and unruly. The reason for this magical belief is
because we believe that when Nzambi came down to
Earth and became man that upon his death, he
descended into the great abyss (hell) and conquered
the demons and other Astral spirits of darkness by
spiritually realigning them to the heavenly divine
order which they became helpers to mankind instead
of causing chaos and destruction. When Nzambi (God)
came down to Earth and was born as a man, He was
known by the name of Nzambi Ntoto. Nzambi Ntoto
means God who touched and walked the Earth as a
man. Nzambi Ntoto is identified as Jesus Christ by
magical practitioners of the magical Gnostic
Quimbanda Goetia tradition.
One of the most important differences between
traditional European derived Goetia magical
traditions
and
the
Afro-Brazilian
American
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition is the option to
be able to use spirit pots which contain the mysteries
of the Quimbanda spirits in their magical rituals of

invoking the Afro-Brazilian American Quimbanda

Goetia magical Astral Exu Spirits. Although the usage
of spirit pots can often times enhance a Quimbanda
Goetia magical ritual, it is not always necessary and
an individual desiring to successfully practice this very
rare and powerful form of magic can do it with using
the simple magical procedures that will be discussed
in detail such as using only a spirit sigil, candle and a
few magical tools to successfully do the rituals and to
manifest whatever they desire.
Like many magical occult traditions, the roots of the
Goetia magical system would be difficult to determine
on the religious timeline of man. We do know that the
Goetia magical tradition is very ancient and its
existence can be traced throughout biblical history and
can be found in such ancient traditions as the ancient
Kabbalah. The Kabbalah is an ancient magical
esoteric tradition practiced by the early ancient Jews.
During the middle ages, there were many magicians
using the magical occult principles of this tradition. It
was during this time that the secrets and the magical
mysteries were starting to be written down in magical
grimoires, but up until this time, most of the secret
knowledge of the mysteries of the powerful Goetia
system was passed down only orally through the
generations. The most famous examples of medieval
Goetia include the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis
("The Lesser Key of Solomon").
According to tradition, the modern day magical system
of the Goetia was founded by the great King Solomon

of Israel. King Solomon is known as being the most

powerful magician of world history. King Solomon was
also known as a necromancer. It is believed that King
Solomon was given the power by God to be able to
command the Astral Spirits. It is also alleged that
King Solomon used the power of the Goetia magical
system to command these Astral Spirits to build the
famous Temple of Solomon.
So just how did the magical mysteries of the Goetia
come to be found in the present day practice of the
Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda Goetia? How did these
Goetia magical mysteries find their way into my
familys magical practice of the Quimbanda religious
tradition?
The history of the present day American Quimbanda
religious tradition cannot be properly discussed
without some understanding of the medieval Knights
Templar. It is believed that the Knights Templar did
directly help shape the mystical rituals, ceremonial
and religious development of modern day religious
practice of Quimbanda by bringing elements of
Freemasonry into it.
The Knights Templar, the Order of the Temple or
simply as Templars, was among the most famous of
the Western Christian military orders. The
organization existed for approximately two centuries
in the Middle Ages. Officially endorsed by the Catholic
Church around 1129, the Order became a favored
charity throughout Christendom, and grew rapidly in
membership and power. Templar knights, in their

distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among

the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. Noncombatant members of the Order managed a large
economic infrastructure throughout Christendom,
innovating financial techniques that were an early
form of banking, and building many fortifications
across Europe and the Holy Land. The Templar's
existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the
Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded.
Rumors about the "Templar's secret initiation
ceremony" created mistrust, and King Philip IV of
France, deeply in debt to the Order, took advantage of
the situation. On Friday 13, 1307, many of the Order's
members in France were arrested, tortured into giving
false confessions, and then burned at the stake.
Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V
disbanded the Order in 1312. When the Knights
Templar was disbanded by the Pope, Portugal's King
Denis formed the new Order of Christ, and invited
them to join. While other European Kings quickly
seized the Templar castles and lands and often
imprisoning or killing the knights themselves, King
Dinis of Portugal did not. Instead, he petitioned the
Pope to found a new order of religious knights, the
Order of Christ. The Pope agreed. King Dinis quietly
spread the word that all former Templars were
welcome, and restored the castles to the new templarsin-disguise.
In 1420, Prince Henry the Navigator, a Portuguese
royal prince was made Grand Master of the Order of

Christ. Funds from the order financed his expeditions

and the first Portuguese navigators sailed under the
red cross of the Knights Templar. Prince Henry the
Navigator was responsible for the early development of
European exploration and maritime trade with other
continents. In the year 1460, Prince Henry the
Navigator died, but the Portuguese empire continued
to sail under the red cross of the Knights Templar and
expanded into the African continent.
In the year 1483, the Portuguese explorer Diogo Co
sailed up the uncharted Congo River, stumbling on
Congo villages and becoming the first European to
encounter the Congo Kingdom. When the Portuguese
first arrived in the Congo, the two nations
immediately began a trading relationship with the
Congolese peoples. Along with trading between the
two nations, there also began an exchange of religious
ideas about Gnostic mysticism.
During his visit, Diogo Co left his men in the Congo
while taking Congolese nobles and bringing them to
Portugal. This is a very important fact in the timeline
of the modern day Quimbanda religious tradition
because the first explorers of the Portuguese
expedition included mostly members of the Knights
Templar. Because of the Knights Templar direct
contact with the Congolese nobles, their religious ideas
did influence the future of the Congolese religion.
Diogo Co returned to the Congo with the Congolese
nobles in the year 1485 along with clergy of the
Portuguese Roman Catholic Church. Shortly after the
Congolese nobles returned to the Congo from Portugal,

the ruling King, Nzinga a Nkuwu, was baptized and

converted to Christianity along with the principal
nobles of the Congolese Kingdom. It was also in the
year 1485 that the first Congo citizen returned from
Portugal and opened the first school and institution of
higher learning. The Congo King, Nzinga a Nkuwu
took the name of Joo I in honor of Portugal's King at
the time, Joo II. The Congolese King, Joo I ruled
until his death around 1506 and was succeeded by his
son, Afonso I (Mvemba a Nzinga). When he became
King, he faced a serious challenge from a half-brother,
Mpanzu a Kitima. The Congo King overcame his
brother in a battle waged at Mbanza Kongo. According
to Afonso's own account, sent to Portugal in 1506, he
was able to win the battle thanks to the intervention of
a heavenly vision of Saint James and the Virgin
Mary. Inspired by these events, he subsequently
designed a coat of arms for Congo that was used by all
following kings on official documents, royal
paraphernalia and the like until 1860. The Congolese
royal coat of arms included the white flag with a red
cross which was the symbol of the Knights Templar.
Although the first Christian King of the Congo, Joo I
later reverted to his traditional beliefs, his son Afonso
I established Christianity as the state religion of his
Kingdom. By the time that Afonso I became the King
of the Congo, the Congo Roman Catholic Church was
always short of ordained clergy, but made up for it by
the employment of a strong laity. Congolese school
teachers or Mestres were the anchor of this system.
Recruited from the nobility and trained in the
Kingdom's schools, they provided religious instruction
and services to others building upon Congo's growing

Christian population. At the same time, they

permitted the growth of syncretic forms of Christianity
which incorporated older religious ideas with
Christian ones. Examples of this are the introduction
of Ki-Kongo words to translate Christian concepts. The
Ki-Kongo words ukisi (an abstract word meaning
charm, but used to mean "holy") and nkanda (meaning
book) were merged so that the Christian Bible became
known as the "Nkanda Ukisi". The church became
known as the "nzo a ukisi". While some European
clergy often denounced these mixed traditions, they
were never able to root them out.
King Aphonso I is also credited with the establishment
of the Congolese Roman Catholic Church and the
creation of a strong priesthood and to this end,
Afonso's son, Henrique was sent to Europe to be
educated. Henrique became an ordained priest and in
1518 was named as Bishop of Utica (a North African
diocese in the hands of Muslims). He returned to the
Congo Kingdom in the early 1520s to run the
Congolese Roman Catholic Church. He died in 1531 as
he was about to go to Europe for the Council of Trent.
The Church that Afonso I created was not simply a
copy or extension of the Portuguese Roman Catholic
Church, but from the very beginning included
elements of Congolese native religious theology. For
example, the Congolese people believed that most of
the denizens of the other world were the souls of
deceased ancestors, and not gods who had never lived
on earth or had a material existence. Thus, the
catechism described the Holy Trinity as "three people"

(antu a tatu). Priests were called by the same name as

the previous clergy (nganga), and more interestingly,
the term "ukisi", an abstract noun from the same root
that gives the word "nkisi" (typically used to describe a
charm, or in 16th century parlance, an "idol") was used
to translate holy. In this way, the Bible was called
"nkanda ukisi" which might also be rendered as
"charm in the form of a book" and a church was called
"nzo a ukisi" or charm in the form of a building. In this
way, Catholic Saints were identified with local
"spiritual entities", and churches built in holy spots.
This theology, developed by Afonso and a team of his
colleagues, working with Portuguese priests, defined
the way in which the Congolese people approached the
new religion and in many ways naturalized it.
Although Afonso is often credited with creating and
establishing the first Congolese Roman Catholic
Church, it is probably his grandson and successor
Diogo I (Nkumbi a Mpudi) who really placed the
Congolese Roman Catholic Church on solid ground.
Under Diogo, a lay organization of teachers first grew
up to support and supplement the always meager
number of ordained priests. Diogo also had the
services of some of the earliest missionaries of the
Jesuit Order, who worked in the Congo from 1548 to
1555.
In the year 1500, the present day country of Brazil was
discovered by the Portuguese explorer, Pedro Alvares
Cabral. Starting around 1514, the Portuguese began to
export African slaves from the Congo that they had
purchased or traded for with the ruling Congolese
royal families and governments to work the sugar

plantations that they were developing in their newly

discovered colony of Brazil. This period is known by
historians as the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The
Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade refers to the trade in
slaves that took place across the Atlantic ocean from
the sixteenth through to the nineteenth centuries. The
vast majority of slaves involved in the Atlantic trade
were Africans from the central and western parts of
the continent, who were sold by African slave dealers
to European traders, who transported them to the
colonies in North and South America.
The colonization of Brazil was a lengthy process.
Eventually, though, sugar became a major industry.
The labor force was of course comprised of black
slaves. The majority of the slaves that were brought to
Brazil that were of Congo origin were already
indoctrinated into the Congolese Catholic Gnostic
religious beliefs. It was this period of time that the
Congolese peoples who had been brought to the New
World began to continue their religious practices and
beliefs but under more secrecy.
It was also during this period that the Congolese
peoples who came into contact with local Amazon
Indigenous Indians began share religious ideas and
soon began to incorporate some of the Indian religious
beliefs into the modern day Quimbanda religious
tradition. Our particular Afro-Brazilian Quimbanda
temple attributes our historical origins and our
present day magical practice of the Gnostic
Quimbanda religious tradition with the baptism of the
Congolese King, Nzinga a Nkuwu in the year 1485.

RELIGIOUS PHILOSOPHY
The Quimbanda religious tradition is monotheistic.
Monotheism is the belief in the existence of one
Supreme God. Religious initiates of the Quimbanda
religion refer to Him as Nzambi or Nzambi Mpungu,
"Almighty God of the Great Celestial Mysteries and
the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth". In the
Quimbanda religious tradition, God is also referred to
as Nzambi Ntoto. In the religious context of our
religious theology, the word Nzambi Ntoto means "God
Who touched and walked the Earth". The religious
initiates of Quimbanda also refer to God as Ndala
Karitanga (God who created Himself) and Sa Kalunga
(Lord Endless, Infinite and Supreme God), after
having created the world and everything in it.
Although many religious practitioners of Quimbanda
would
consider
its
religious
philosophy
as
monotheistic, there are many elements of pantheism
which have been incorporated within the confines of
the belief of one true God. Pantheism is the view that
the Universe (Nature) and God are identical and that
the essence of God is found within the Cosmos as an
all-encompassing unity and the sacredness of Nature.
There has been in recent years much debate and
confusion about the Quimbanda religion as being
polytheistic, but it is not. It is difficult to delineate
from notions such as pantheism and monotheism. The
confusion comes from the lack of understanding
between the concepts of the term worship and the
term veneration. Worship is an act of religious
devotion usually directed to one or more

deities. Veneration is a special act of honoring a saint:

a dead person who has been identified as singular in
the traditions of the religion. In the world of
Quimbanda as practiced here in our holy temple, we
worship God and venerate the deities or spirits (Nkisi).
Catholics venerate the angelic spiritual beings called
angels. Catholics also venerate the saints, (among
them Mary), as human beings who had remarkable
qualities, lived their faith in God to the extreme and
are believed to be capable of interceding in the process
of salvation for others; however, Catholics do not
worship them as gods. There are other examples of
monotheistic religions such as Christianity which
embrace the concepts of a plurality of the divine; for
example, the Trinity, in which God is one being in
three eternal persons (the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit). Additionally, most Christian churches
teach Jesus to be two natures (divine and human),
each possessing the full attributes of that nature,
without mixture or intermingling of those attributes.
Although there can be found in the African continent
as well as many other places of the world the belief in
polytheistic religious beliefs and practices, the concept
of monotheism in the ancient African continent has
existed for over 8500 years and its concept is not new.
The practice of monotheism in Africa predates the
birth of Christianity.Most of the fear and
misunderstanding about the Quimbanda and
Candomble religious traditions come from individuals
who have a lack of understanding about the religious
philosophy of African cultures and their sacred
traditions. Although we often define those spiritual
entities venerated and associated with the Quimbanda

religious tradition as deities or spirits, they are not.

The word deity and the word spirit for those practicing
traditional Quimbanda at the American Candomble
Church simply means and refers to an elevated
spiritual being (Holy One) which can be petitioned to
intercede on our behalf directly to Nzambi (God) and
assist us in the process of the spiritual elevation and
the evolution of our soul. These deities or spirits are
also referred to as angelic beings. The word spiritual
being can be defined as an incorporeal being believed
to have powers to affect the course of human events.
The word incorporeal means having no material body
or form The word angelic being can be defined as a
benevolent celestial being that acts as an intermediary
between Heaven and Earth. This concept is the same
as the veneration of the angels and the Saints by
Roman Catholics. There is only one true God in the
Quimbanda religious philosophy and we call him
Nzambi, the "Father and Creator of the Heavens and
the Earth", the "Creator of all that is Seen and
Unseen". The Afro-Brazilian religion of Quimbanda is
a mystery religion or Gnostic religious tradition. A
mystery religion is any religion with an Arcanum, or
secret wisdom. In a mystery religion, an inner core of
beliefs, practices, and the religion's true nature, are
revealed only to those who have been initiated into its
secrets.

SPIRIT PANTHEON
If you are going to have success in using the spiritual
principles of this book as well as many of my other
books written about our Quimbanda religious
traditions, it is important for you to understand the
religious concept and spiritual function of the deities
and the spirits of the powerful Quimbanda pantheon.
By understanding the spiritual concept of the
Quimbanda magico-religious system you will be able
see very fast and spectacular results in your spiritual
requests. The Afro-Brazilian Gnostic Quimbanda
religious philosophy believes that the Universe and
Earth are divided into Seven Greater Quimbanda
Kingdoms and Seven Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms or
spiritual realms. Each of these spiritual realms has
been appointed with spiritual guardians by Nzambi.
These deities were placed there by Nzambi to govern
over these realms where these spirits reside. Each of
these Quimbanda kingdoms deals with various aspects
of how mankind relates to the spirits as found in
nature. The American Quimbanda concept is very
complex, but I will try to explain it in a simple
comprehendible manner for the purpose of this book
the spiritual principles and sacred theology of the
Quimbanda religious tradition practiced in our temple.
The Quimbanda pantheon of deities and spirits is
composed of seven (7) outer Quimbanda Kingdoms and
seven (7) inner Quimbanda Kingdoms. These sacred
kingdoms are known as, The Seven Greater
Quimbanda Kingdoms and The Seven Lesser
Quimbanda Kingdoms. The realm of Heaven where

Nzambi resides is not considered a category of one of

the Quimbanda Kingdoms because he is the Creator
and it is only through his Divine Grace that all of the
outer and inner kingdoms exist. In the Quimbanda
religious system, Nzambi is considered masculine but
can create duality in his work and in his sacred
creations.The first three (3) Kingdoms of the
Quimbanda deities are more commonly known as the
Quimbanda Trinity. The Quimbanda Trinity is
composed of the three deities, Exu Maioral, Exu Rei
and Maria Padilla Reina. Together these three
powerful spiritual forces govern the great cosmos and
the universal laws of the Earth for Nzambi. That is
why the religious practitioners of the Quimbanda
religion venerate these three deities. The veneration of
the Quimbanda Trinity is a central spiritual belief of
our faith. Religious practitioners of Quimbanda believe
that the deities of the Quimbanda pantheon were
placed there by Nzambi to watch over the Universe
and over the actions of mankind. Within the realm of
the outer confines of the Kingdoms of the Quimbanda
Trinity there are found the mysteries of the inner The
Seven Greater Quimbanda Kingdoms and The Seven
Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms. The Seven Lesser
Quimbanda Kingdoms are governed by and ruled over
by the Quimbanda deities of King, Exu Rei and the
Queen, Maria Padilla Reina. The deity Queen, Maria
Padilla Reina is also known as Pomba Gira by the
religious practitioners of the Quimbanda religious
faith. The deities King, Exu Rei and the Queen, Maria
Padilla Reina are believed to have seven different
spiritual paths which are split among The Seven
Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms. In the following

Kingdoms, the word deity refers to a highly evolved
spiritual force that Nzambi placed in charge of a
particular Quimbanda Kingdom and the word spirit
(Nkisi) refers to a spiritual force that is submissive to
the deity spirits. In both cases, both forces dominate
and have a powerful control and influence over the
destiny of human beings. Within the confines of the
Seven Greater Quimbanda Kingdoms there can be
found nine (9) individual spiritual realms. Each of
these realms contains various occult mysteries and the
keys to open up various dimensions of powerful
spiritual forces and entities. The following book is
about the powerful magical and spiritual mysteries
found within the First Greater Quimbanda Kingdom of
the Most Holy Divine Angel, Exu Maioral. The First
Greater Quimbanda Kingdom is where the powerful
astral spirit mysteries of the 72 Astral Exu Spirits can
be found. Within this mysterious and magical kingdom
there can also be found the mysteries of nine different
realms (dimensions) of spiritual forces, each of these
realms unique as are the very powerful entities also
found within these nine dimensions.Although the
Quimbanda religious tradition believes that these
spiritual entities have a great impact and influence on
the lives and destiny of all human beings, we also
believe that Nzambi at the moment of the Divine Act
of Creation gave human beings the ultimate divine
gift which is freedom of choice and the freedom to
decide what path we should take in this life. This
important concept is one of the Seven Principles of the
Quimbanda Universal Cosmic Laws. In the

there is no wrong. There are only consequences that
result because of our choices and from our decisions.
The Quimbanda spirits and deities were placed here
by Nzambi to assist mankind with whatever decisions
that we may chose and to spiritually assist us in
manifesting our desires. That is why the Quimbanda
religious tradition is centered on the veneration of the
spiritual deity known as Exu. Exu is the Divine
Messenger of the Crossroads of life. When we decide
to make a decision, Exu is always there present
reminding us that there will be consequences to our
actions because we have freedom of choice. The
crossroads of life represent the many consequences or
paths that may come our way because of our choices
and because we have freedom of choice. The religious
practitioners of the Quimbanda religious tradition
believe that the spiritual concept of freedom of choice
is a Divine Privilege bestowed upon mankind by
Nzambi. Freedom of choice is not a right; it is a gift
from God.

AN EXPLANATION OF THE ASTRAL EXU SPIRITS

The spiritual astral entities who reside within the
First Greater Quimbanda Kingdom of the Most Holy
Angel, Exu Maioral in their various nine realms along
with the 72 Astral Exu Goetia Spirits are an extension
of Nzambi's guiding hand. For those practicing the
orthodox Gnostic Quimbanda religious tradition at our
temple, we believe in Divine Intervention and the
Divine Intercession" of the pantheon of Holy Ones
(spiritual beings) which make up the hierarchy of our
religious beliefs and who are manifestations of
Nzambis Divine Grace.The religious doctrine,
religious theology and religious philosophy of our
Gnostic Quimbanda religious and magical tradition
teaches and believes in the existence of only one true
God, Nzambi. We believe that only through His Divine
Intervention and Divine Grace that the Universe, the
Heavens and the Earth were created and caused into
existence. We also believe that Nzambi is also the
creator of all things visible and all things invisible.
The religious doctrine, religious theology and religious
philosophy of our Gnostic Quimbanda religious and
magical tradition teaches and believes that the Spirit
of Nzambi has manifested here on Earth in the
physical form of man in various times throughout the
history of human civilization. When the Spirit of
Nzambi takes the physical form of man on Earth, we
call Him, Nzambi Ntoto, the God who touched and
walked the Earth and became man. We believe that
Nzambi divided the great Universe into seven realms
(Seven Quimbanda Kingdoms) of spiritual and
physical existence. In each of these seven realms, we

believe that Nzambi placed the Holy Ones to watch

over and protect the Universe and the Earth. We
believe that the primary function of these guardians is
to give light to mankind so one day we may be
reunited with our ancestors and find our way home to
the Kingdom of Nzambi. We believe that Nzambi
placed the spiritual beings of the Quimbanda Trinity
to govern over all aspects of the seven realms (Seven
Quimbanda Kingdoms). The Quimbanda Trinity is
composed of three Holy spiritual beings which govern
all matters concerning the Universe, the Earth and the
life and actions of every man and woman. These three
Holy spiritual beings are named, Exu Maioral, Exu Rei
and Maria Padilla Reina Pomba Gira. That is why the
symbol of the trident is used to represent the
collective spiritual forces of the Holy Quimbanda
Trinity by initiates of the Quimbanda religious
tradition and faith. The end points of the trident are
pointed like an arrow and when held in your hand in
an upward position, the three points (the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity) are pointed towards the realm of
the great Heavens where Nzambi resides. When the
symbol of the trident is held in your hand in a
downward position, the three points (the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity) are pointed towards the realm of
Earth where man resides. The staff of the trident
represents the unification of the Holy Quimbanda
Trinity coming together as one divine spiritual force
with Nzambi, the God of Heaven. The religious
doctrine, religious theology and religious philosophy of
our Gnostic Quimbanda religious and magical
tradition teaches and believes that the Holy
Quimbanda Trinity and the spiritual beings which

reside within these seven realms are all extensions of

the great mysteries of Nzambi, the Lord our God. Our
religious doctrine, religious theology and religious
philosophy also teach and believe that the Spirit of
Nzambi came down from the great Heavens and was
born and became man. We believe that Nzambi has
physically manifested Himself on Earth many times by
being born and becoming man throughout the history
of mankind. We believe that when Nzambi incarnated
as man throughout the history of man, He has been
called by many names. We believe that in each of these
times that Nzambi manifested here on Earth as man,
He did so to save mankind from self-destruction by our
own hands by re-establishing spiritual order in
troubled times to save mankind from damnation. We
believe that in Nzambis last incarnation here on
Earth as a man, He was known as Jesus Christ
(Nzambi Ntoto). We believe that Nzambi incarnate
(Jesus Christ/Nzambi Ntoto) was persecuted by man
(Pontius Pilate) because He re-established mans belief
in God and saved us from damnation. We believe that
it was Nzambis will that His physical life was ended
by which He did allow himself to be sacrificed to save
man from damnation and to restore the heavenly order
between man and the world of the ancestors. We
believe that after He died, the Spirit of Nzambi
descended into the Great Abyss and conquered
darkness so that once again man would no longer walk
in darkness. The term of Divine Act of Grace is called
the Great Awakening. We believe that after three
days after He was laid to rest He did physically rise
again from the dead and then ascended into the
Heavens where He is seated over the mysteries of the

Universe and the Seven Quimbanda Kingdoms. In a

further explanation, the religious doctrine, religious
theology and religious philosophy of our particular
Gnostic Quimbanda religious tradition believes that
before Nzambi (Nzambi Ntoto) incarnated here on
Earth and became man, the World was in constant
spiritual chaos. This spiritual instability was caused
by and occurred after the fall of the angelic beings
from the Grace of God in a time more commonly
known as the Angelic Wars of Heaven. When this
angelic rebellion took place, many rebellious angelic
beings left the Heavenly realm along with legions of
spiritual entities more commonly known as demonic
beings (the 72 Astral Spirits) and that they did fall
and take refuge in the inner and outer invisible realms
of the Earth and the underworld more commonly
known as the "Great Abyss". When Nzambi incarnated
here on Earth and was born as man He did so to save
His children from the perils of spiritual damnation
caused by these fallen angelic beings and legions of
demonic beings. When Nzambi (Nzambi Ntoto) allowed
Himself to be sacrificed at the hands of His enemies
(those individuals who had aligned themselves with
the fallen angelic beings and legions of demonic
beings) He did so that upon his physical death as a
man, His spirit would be able to descent in to the
Great Abyss (Underworld) and defeat and conquered
the rebellious angelic beings and the legions of
demonic beings by triumphing over them during the
three days of His death. By this Divine Act of
Salvation and for the sake of His children here on
Earth He reestablished the Heavenly chain of Divine
Order between the Earth, the Great Cosmos and

Heaven. The demonic spiritual beings that re-aligned

with Nzambi's new world order were granted divine
grace of forgiveness by Nzambi and became
enlightened spiritual beings and are now known more
commonly as the 72 Astral Exu Spirits of the
Quimbanda Goetia magical tradition. It is also
through this act of divine grace, that Nzambi
established the Seven Greater Quimbanda Kingdoms
and the Seven Lesser Quimbanda Kingdoms. The
magical tradition teaches and believes that because of
this Holy event, Nzambi did re-organize the spiritual
realm and placed the Quimbanda Trinity to watch
over the Universe, the Earth and over mankind within
the confines of the seven realms. It was because of this
re-alignment that is why the 72 astral spirits were
referred to as demons before the death of Nzambi as a
man and after his resurrection the 72 astral spirits
became enlightened spiritual beings and were no
longer classified as demons. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that after this triumph over the
rebellion in the Great Abyss His spirit did return to
his physical body where He did rise again and was
resurrected and ascended into the great Heavens
where He awaits the souls of all men at the moment of
our physical death to reunite with Him and the
ancestors in glory and light. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that there is a distinct difference

between the words of spirit and the word soul as

used in the religious context of our magical belief. The
word spirit refers to the immaterial part of man.
Man is not a spirit, he has a spirit. The word soul
refers to the makeup of man. The soul makes you
unique and different from every other person. The
soul is how you relate to others and how you
understand yourself. The spirit is how you relate to
Nzambi (God). The spirit is part of the soul, much
like the mind is part of the soul. It is the soul,
though, that comprises who you are. Both the soul and
spirit leave the physical body of an individual when
they die. The religious doctrine, religious theology and
religious philosophy of our Gnostic Quimbanda
religious and magical tradition teaches and believes
that after the third day He did rise again from the
dead and then ascended into the Heavens where He is
seated over the mysteries of the Universe and the
Seven Quimbanda Kingdoms. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that Nzambi will one day again
incarnate again as man to re-establish the Heavenly
order here on Earth. We also believe that Nzambis
Kingdom here on Earth will have no end because it is
only through Him that the great Universe and the
Earth is allowed to exist. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that the Holy Spirit of Nzambi
manifests within the Mysteries of the Quimbanda
Trinity and the Seven Quimbanda Kingdoms. We
believe that one day like our ancestors we will return

back to our heavenly home of Heaven and will reunite

with our ancestors who are kneeling at Nzambis feet
in glory and light. The religious doctrine, religious
theology and religious philosophy of our Gnostic
Quimbanda religious and magical tradition teaches
and believes that the spirits of our ancestors can
spiritually and physically manifest to man by
petitioning them through prayers and devotions. The
primary purpose that the spirits of our ancestors
manifest here on Earth to man is to assist us on our
journey of life so that one day we will be reunited with
them in Heaven. We also believe that by petitioning
the Holy Ones which govern over the realms of the
Seven Quimbanda Kingdoms that they will be able to
assist man by interceding on our behalf to Nzambi.
The religious doctrine, religious theology and religious
magical tradition teaches and believes that our
particular historical religious traditions have been
ordained by Nzambi and has evolved into the most
orthodox Congo derived gnostic religious tradition in
its truest and purest form of the Quimbanda religious
practice as brought to Earth by Nzambi, the God of
Heaven. For this reason we believe that we are
Nzambis chosen people and that Nzambis Kingdom
here on Earth will have no end. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that we are Nzambi's chosen
people because we are following the Gnostic
Quimbanda religious tradition in its original form that
was established by the First Prophet of our Church,
King, Nzinga a Nkuwu (King Joo I) in the year 1485

of the Congolese Empire which was ordained by

Nzambi and the ancestors. The religious doctrine,
teaches and believes that through prayers, spiritual
devotions to the spirits of the Seven Quimbanda
