Faculty development is used to educate faculty on professional topics,

instructional and leadership
Brings legislation up dates to the faculty, and implements them
I watched one of the Patricia Benner videos, The Integrating Concepts and
Research of Educating Nursesin this video she explains how faculty and
students gain a sense of salience, and the journey from novice to mastery
nurse.
I learned the most from the workshop given by Dr. Colleen SwainThe UT
Tyler Student Engagement Workshop
o Student engagement is about learning
o Making connections with the students is important, for example
learning their names. By learning the students names and engaging
with the students makes them feel important.
o She made a good suggestion of clearing connections prior to starting
lecture. This would be done by allowing students to share with their
neighbor whats on their mind, for a couple minutes, then start class.
This may eliminate stresses the students have on their minds, and
allow the students to be able to focus on the lecture content.
o Asking questions and explaining clearly what the goals and
expectations are helps the students know what to focus on
o Dr. Swain gave many examples of apps and websites that can be used
in lecture and relaying the content to the students
o I learned to be aware of the students hopes and fears, assess for
understanding
o I like the referencing she used for concept maps, making thinking
visible. I have not been a fan of concept maps in my studiesthe
picture is too broad, however, I know that the maps help link all the
concepts together which is useful to visual learners.

I explored the National Council State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) website.

o I read through several pages including Item development programto
become an NCLEX writer.
o I watched a video on Professional Boundaries in Nursingexplaining
the importance of professional conduct, therapeutic communication.
o This site has lots of info about Policy and Government, licensure,
updates on board regulations, and other nursing topics.
I honestly did not know the enormous amount of resources that are offered to
nursing faculty, through the institutions, as well as, online and through
workshops.
I have attended two faculty meetings at MCC. The following topics were
addressed:
o Announcements, approve minutes from previous meeting, reports from
all the committee meetings.
o The nursing faculty discussed individual student situations, pre-NCLEX
test grades for 4th level students, test grades
o The Vice President of the College attended one meeting. He asked the
faculty for feedback on how the semester was going.
o At one meeting the Education nurses from Baylor Scott & White came
to introduce new charting white boards for all the pt rooms.
o During the meetings, the faculty were allowed to offer suggestions to
the director on how to make things better for the students.
This week I attended a Nursing Advisory Meeting. This committee consists of
professional from the Waco community. The members work in the clinical
areas where nursing students from MCC perform clinicals. The directors of the
LVN and ADN programs gave a yearly report on the success of their
programs, as well as passing rate for NCLEX. There was open discussion
regarding future program changes. There was a student from 4 th level that
came to discuss her opinions of the ADN program and the concept-based
curriculum.
o This meeting was very enlightening to me. I enjoyed hearing about the
success of the 2 nursing programs. I did not realize that the
professionals in the community are so involved in the nursing
programs. The directors made reference many times that they want to
be the school of choice when hiring.
Overall, I realize that there are goals set by the individual nursing programs
to produce successful students and faculty. There are endless amounts of
opportunities for faculty to discover ways of improving their teaching.
