Types of Rocks Lesson Plan
Materials: 1 bag of metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary rocks, 1 bag of magnifying glasses,
rock questionerre (review), tube of sedimentary rock and soil, hard hat, Rocks and Minerals by
Melvin and Gilda Berger.
Objective: Students will be able to determine the difference between Sedimentary, Metamorphic
and Igneous rocks. Recognize the texture, luster of different rocks.
Key Terms: Sedimentary Rock: (Sediment) Rock that forms from material that settles into
layers and is squeezed and hardened into a solid rock.
Metamorphic Rock: Rock that has changed by heat and pressure, was once a different type of
rock such as igneous or sedimentary and was changed by severe heat.
Igneous Rock: Rock that has melted, cooled and hardened. Changes from liquid magma from a
volcano into a solid.
Important Questions:
What rock comes from loose material that has been pressed down?
What rock has been changed from the form it once was?
What rock is made from fire of the Earth?
Activities:

Pass out magnifying glasses


Address the class, begin by saying the vocabulary and what it means. Ask questions
about volcanoes and if they have some understanding of the material. (8 mins)
Pass around the rocks categorized by type. Have them analyze each group. Each set of
rocks takes about 10 mins each.
Review after looking at the rocks and see if they can remember what each type of rock
means. (5 mins)
