Swales Criteria

1. A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of


common public goals.

2. A discourse community has mechanisms of


intercommunication among its members.

3. A discourse community uses its participatory


mechanisms primarily to provide information and
feedback.

4. A discourse community utilizes and hence possesses


one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of
its aims.

5. In addition to owning genres, a discourse community


has acquired a specific lexis.

6. A discourse community has a threshold level of


members with a suitable degree of relevant content and
discoursal expertise

How Your Community Fits/Doesnt Fit the Criteria


My community that I choose to study does have a broad
common goal. All the members of my chosen community try to
help entrepreneurs, and small start-up companies.
The community certainly has mechanisms of communication,
however I dont think the methods of communication are
particularly unique to my community. (cell-phone calls, emails,
word of mouth)
My community does use its mechanisms of communication
largely to provide information and feedback. Information is
provided through emails, calls, flyers, and meetings. Feedback is
given to my community in the same fashion, through word of
mouth, and through surveys.
Yes, my community does feature more than one genre in
attempts to further the accomplishing of its goals. Sometimes my
community members are alone in there office researching,
engaging in phone calls, and other times they are attending
meetings, or handing out flyers.
My community certainly has its on genres, situations, and
settings in the work place; however Im not positive as to
whether or not a specific, unique form, of diction has been
acquired. Although, my community does use certain words that
the average U.S. citizen may not be familiar with. (Patent, NDA,
market, etc.)
Yes, my community does have an adequate number of members
the hold an appropriate degree of information, content, and
expertise.
