Objective 4: Describe what constitutes valid and reliable observation

especially with regards to operationalizing variables, experimenter

bias, demand characteristics, and unobtrusive measures
!

What constitutes valid and reliable observations would be an observation that everyone
would agree with or a good observation. Who ever is directing the observation should
make sure that the observation is happening in a controlled environment and must be
able to make the variable change. If the experiment is in a natural environment and
there is no variable controlled by the observer than the observer can not interfere with
the person observed and if they continue to interfere it makes the observation invalid.
The observation has to be reliable and consistent.

This article was about assessing the validity of observations. It discusses that
observational data can be threatened in a few ways. The first would be reactivity, being
that subjects do not behave the way they normally would. Another threat would be the
measuring instruments used in observation.

This article explained how to make accurate observations and get reliable results. There
were three steps on how to make a valid and reliable observation. They are to build the
observers capacity, which means that the observers are well equipped to conduct
accurate research. The second is to create conductive conditions. The third is to monitor
and ensure quality, take that extra step to make sure the observations are correct.
