Brain disorder that causes severe shifts in mood, energy,


activity levels, and ability to do everyday tasks.
Different from usual ups and downs
Results of untreated bipolar disorder
Characterized by extreme changes in mood.
- Mania or hypomania
- Depression
- Mixed state

- Mood: overly happy, excited, and energetic; irritable, confusion, anger, feeling
trapped.
- Behavior: fast talking, easily distracted, goal planning, poor sleep, impulsive sex
and money spend

- May also be hypomania

- Mood: sad, worry, empty, sense of worthlessness


- Behavior: slowed down, change in sleeping or eating habits, thinking or
attempting suicidal
