Write-up Questions
The aspect of the syllabus that I decided to develop into art is the causes of the Mexican
Revolution (Bullet Point #1). More specifically, my art considers the economic factors of this
tumultuous and politically unstable, yet momentous, era of Mexican history. My piece is
essentially an artistic reproduction of the front page of a hypothetical newspaper, El Economista.
The thesis for my artwork is that, although the rife social unrest and political ineptitude of
leaders contributed to the development of the Mexican revolution, the economic catalysts were
what exacerbated the turbulence, engendering opposition from all socioeconomic strata of
Mexican society. This is because the economic factors affected both the rich and the poor. Social
issues were faced by peasantry and laborers, while ruling classes sought consolidation of their
tenuous power and influence, but economic problems affected all groups.
