Monday, April 13, 2015

Silver Spring Civic Center
The newly formed Montgomery County Latino Advocacy Coalition (MCLAC), a coalition
comprised of an active group of Latino and non-Latino parents, community leaders, and
organizations, held its first press conference today to highlight the importance of hiring a
Superintendent who will work to close the achievement gap in MCPS. MCLAC presented its
four overarching goals in front of about 100 MCPS Board of Education members, MCPS
educators, students, Latino families, governmental representatives, community-based
organizations, and other supporters. These goals include:

Engaging in System-wide Reform

Creating New Career Pathways and Increasing Technical Education Options
Building a Diverse and Culturally and Linguistically Competent MCPS Staff
Providing Meaningful Ways for Parents to Access and Participate in Policy and
Decision-Making Processes

MCLAC calls upon MCPS to work collaboratively with the Latino community to address the
achievement gap and allocate resources to systemically improve access to educational
opportunities and attain college and career readiness for Latino students countywide. MCLAC
is committed to find innovative, collaborative, and systemic solutions to improve the quality of
life of the Latino community in Montgomery County.
