Objective 5: Describe the differences between correlational and

experimental research especially with respect to issues of causality

and prediction

!
Experimental research is when one or more variables are changed the determine
the effect on the dependent variable. The researchers attempt to predict what may
happen during the experiment. Correlational research is used to find relationships
between variables. There are four different outcomes in correlational research: Positive,
negative, and no correlation. Causation is when one event happens because something
else happens. This occurs in both experimental and correlational research. Prediction
plays a large role in both types of research as well. Prediction is when you create a
hypothesis to guess the outcome.

In this video, Dr. Robert Reiner gives different tips for conducting experimental
research. He talks about the ways to set up an experiment and the different parts that
are needed in an experiment. There are ten steps to take in order to set up an
experiment and carry out research.

This video talks about the limits the correlational research has. There is never perfect
correlation, it is very rare. If someone saw a perfect correlation, they would look at their
research again. There are always factors that interfere with the study.
