Mental Oral Starters

Y1 Summer Teaching Sequence D6

Activity 1
Objectives: To count to 100; Recognise multiples of 10
Resources: Children

Children sit in a circle. Count round the circle 1, 2, 3... When you get to
ten the child who says ten stands up and holds their arms up like a

Mexican wave as do the children who say 20, 30, 40 90.


Keep going round and round the circle until you reach 100 when every one
stands and waves their arms. Repeat starting at a different point in the
circle.

Activity 2
Objective: To count in twos
Resources: Large 2p coins, washing line and pegs, 10 real 2p coins and a tin

Count together along a line of large 2p coins on a washing line, tapping


each coin twice and saying the multiples of 2 loudly.
Repeat, this time just saying the multiples of 2.
Repeat, but stopping occasionally to ask How much money is that?
Drop 10 real 2p coins into a tin one at a time, children count in 2s as you
do so.

Activity 3
Objectives: To count in twos and tens: recognise odd and even numbers
Resources: Ten 20p coins, ten 10p coins and a tin

Drop ten 2p coins into a tin, one at a time, children count in twos as you do
so. Stop occasionally to ask how much money is in the tin. These are even
numbers. Which numbers aren't we saying? What are those called?
Drop ten 10p coins into the tin, children count in tens. Stop occasionally to
ask how much money is in the tin. These numbers are called multiples of
10.
Take 10p coins out at a time, children count back in tens until they say
zero. Show the empty tin to check.

Activity 4
Objective: Sort numbers: recognise odd and even numbers; Recognise multiples
of 10
Resources: Whiteboards

Ask each child to write a number between 1 and 20 on their whiteboard.


Each group sort their boards into those with even numbers and those with
odd numbers.
Repeat, this time children writing numbers between 1 and 100. Children
sort their boards into those with multiples of 10 and those which do not
have multiples of 10.
