Delegates from Delaware

RICHARD
BASSETT
Even though Bassett attended the convention, he didnt
make speeches, he didnt serve on any commission, and he
didnt make critical votes. He stated that he allowed others
to make the major steps.

GUNNING BEDFORD
JR
Although Bedford missed a couple sessions he spoke on
several occasions. He was also on the committee that
drafted the Great Compromise.

JACOB BROOM
Jacob never missed a session and spoke on
various occasions. However, his role was a minor
role.

JOHN DICKINSON
At the convention Dickinson had a very
strong voice. He wanted to set up a
defense for smaller states. This led to
congressional representation for the
Great Compromise.

GEORGE READ
Read missed very few sessions if not none.
He defended the rights of smaller states.

Signed US Constitution

Why or why not?

Richard Bassett

All of the delegates from

Delaware had a chance to sign

Gunning Bedford Jr

the constitution. The only ones

that didnt sign the constitution

Jacob Broom

were because they refused.

John Dickinson

John didnt actually sign the

constitution himself. He had his
fellow delegate George Read sign
it for him.

George Read

All of the
delegates from
Delaware were
Federalists

After the convention

Richard Bassett:
After the convention Basset had a bright career in the state and federal government. He also served in
the US senate.

distinct judge for his state where he was to serve for life.
Jacob Broom:
After the convention Broom went to the outskirts of the city where the Brandywine river is located. There
he became postmaster and he continued to hold various local offices and participate in many economic
endeavors.
John Dickinson:
After the convention, he never left the state and federal matters. He continued to write and act and
became Delaware's chairman for the constitutional convention (Delaware).
George Read:
He served in US senate from 1789-1793. After this he accepted the post as Chief Justice for Delaware
and held it until death.

Conservative or Liberal?

Delaware is a liberal
state.

What were their opinions on

the 4 compromises we talked
about?

Gunning Bedford and John

Dickinson were the only ones who
voted for the Great compromise.
Otherwise, the other three either
had minor roles or didnt speak on
those issues.
