Styles

In concert and as live

It seems most music filmed live as a music video is more rock and
classic. They prefer to use this option to show they can play the
instruments and they're classic. Bands like AC/DC have made live
concert music videos.

Animation

The Gorillaz have always used animation in their music videos as well
as album art, each person in the band is used in animation for their
own character. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8Qp38qT-xI This
gives off a different feel and I suppose its what the band prefer rather
than making music videos of them self it may be easier to do
animation.

Interpretive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbJtYqBYCV8 Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah This song is based on a love story and
shows two different perspectives in the relationship because
unfortunately theyre distance. This type of video is based
upon events in the lyrics and the video is used to shoe the
message of the song and lyrics putting it into a better
perspective.

Impressionist

Impressionist in music is the impression the video gives you and the
message it puts across.

The Gorillaz use animation in most of their music videos and this puts
across a very fascinating feel but is also quite weird to watch, it also
shows a human in the video and seeing him with the animation gives
off a positive vibe. The chorus is sung by children which it shows in the
video.

Surrealist

Michael Jackson Thriller is a good example of a surrealist because the

events in the music video will never happen and are hard to believe.
This song was hugely and is still very popular because Michael Jackson
was the king of pop. This video uses zombies dancing in a very catchy
routine and puts across a funny but scary impression.

Pastiche

This is where another artist adapts or uses the same style as another artist
and sort of creates the same style of music and video. Madonna was the first
women to create sort of sexy surreal videos and Lady Gaga now also uses
this kind of style but has bumped it up to a whole different level and is quite
explicit. Lady Gaga born this way really expresses her personality and really
shows her off in the video because she wears such colourful huge outfits this
makes her different and she is a huge idol which Madonna was also. Lady
Gaga has adapted this because she wants to be the queen of pop.

Parody

Parody is a remake of a music video and can be used in different ways,

most parodies are made to take the mick out of the music video and
recreate it to make it funny and even twisting the lyrics.
http://www.slideshare.net/lclarkhfc/parody-pastiche

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV1FrqwZyKw

This video is a parody remake of Nicki Manaj Anaconda, this video

really takes the mick out of the video and is as explicit as Nicki Manajs
version. They twist the lyrics and state things like This video makes no
sence parodies are mostly used for comedy.

Homage

Homage is like a tribute, a tribute can be aimed towards anything for

example celebrating a life or creating a tribute of a song. Similar to a
parody but Homage is a way of showing respect by mimicking the artist
whereas a parody would be taking the mick.

Lady Gaga performed a tribute at the Brits Awards and created an

amazing emotional feel to the whole audience.

Influence of commercials

This is the influence the song gives of like for example Fergie
Glamerous is promoting a glamorous lifestyle.

Cutting to the beat

Cutting the beat is important in music because when used at the right
time in the right place can have a really good impact on the listener,
the better the cut is the more likely its going to catch peoples
attention. Cutting to the beat makes people want to dance to the beat
of the song and getting it right is vital in my opinion. It also makes it
very catchy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw

Adele Rolling in the deep is a good example of this because it has a

slow drum build up and then drops with the chorus at the perfect time.

Effects

Effects are very important in music videos and when used right can
make the video look incredible, most videos use small effects that you
may not notice. Music Videos would have effects like after effects,
digital effects and visual effects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSD-oq9krRs

http://www.fxguide.com/quicktakes/music-videos-effects-highlights/

Logic Under Pressure uses a huge amount of effects because there is

a lot of fighting and gun shots, special effects are needed here because
obviously they cant use real bullets and actually fight.

Miming and Lip Syncing

Miming and lip syncing is a technique which allows the artist to just
mime to the song.

If the audio is already recorded its easy for the artist to just lip sync
and mime the lyrics when making a music video but it can go bad
because if the artist is out of time with the lyrics people will notice it
and this would just ruin the video.

http://mashable.com/2015/04/02/mime-through-time/

Multi-Image

Multi-Image is effective because it gives a wider perspective in the

music video and gives more things to look at which will therefor grab
more attention. Multi-Image is like a split screen so for example seeing
two different perspectives in a relationship like Hey there Delilah
where the relationship is distant and you see both perspectives giving
you a wider perspective on the video.

Camera Movement

Camera Movement is used to give a wider perspective on the music

video which will then grab more attention without any camera
movement it would be very boring. During live shows at festivals for
example the camera changes from the band on stage to like a Birdseye
cam showing the whole crowd and stage which makes it a lot more
interesting.

http://www.mediacollege.com/video/shots/movement.html

Angles

Angles are very important because each angle shows a different

perspective and different angles can grab different peoples attention.
When the angle is low looking up to the artist for example if they were
on stage it makes them look more dominant and gives them the
spotlight. Changing the angle keeps someone interested instead of
staying in the same position.
