Dear Friends: We are heading into a most important time for the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security. At the end of April, the United Nations will discuss the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. A mass movement is organizing, demanding an end to nuclear weapons. We have not seen this kind of public protest against nuclear weapons for many years. Perhaps some of the strength of the Peace and Planet movement is that it ties the global threat posed by nuclear weapons to issues of climate change and racism. In 1970, when our committee was formed, ending nuclear weapons was definitely the compelling issue of the day, and the desire to see an end to nuclear weapons has never left the global consciousness. Unfortunately, other issues seem to have crowded it from the first tier of the public agenda. Although the fear of destruction from climate change, racism and other forms of intolerance is on the rise, these issues are dwarfed by the destructive power wielded by countries that possess nuclear weapons, and the speed at which they could utterly annihilate people and planet. Now, once again, there is a massive public outcry against these terrible and useless weapons of global destruction. Our committee members remain deeply committed to the pursuit of global disarmament, peace and security, and believe the time has come to rid our planet of these horrific weapons. In peace, Bruce Knotts NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security
