Contact your Caterpillar dealer for details. General Recommendations Safety Always make repairs with the engine stopped and the slarting system disabled, When servicing the ‘generator, ensure that switch gear and automatic lransfer switches will not present a shock hazard. Loot them out on the generator being serviced, Record Keeping Maintain a log or record keeping systern to document all gauge readings, problems, repairs, and maintenance performed on the equipment Space Heaters Moisture is a natural enemy of generators and all electrical equipment. Every effort must be made to keep the generator as cry as possible, Space heaters should be operated inside the generator when itis not in use fo maintain the integrity of the generator windings. I space heaters are not provided with, generators, consideration should be given to adding them. 3 Information Section General Recommendations The stop-manual-automatic switch on the cranking ariel must be set at “stop” position when perform: ng maintenance or repair work on a standby gener- ator set. This prevents the unit from starting it. a Power failure or voltage drop should occur while ‘working of the unit. To prevent personal injury due to accidental start- ing of the engine, disconnect the batteries or disa- ble the starting system betore doing maintenance or repair work. Lock out ail switch gear and automatic transfer switches associated with the generator while per- forming any generator maintenance or repairs. En- sure no shock hazard exists. Failure to comply could result in personal injury or death. ‘The maintenance schedules included in this publication are also included in the Operation ang Maintenance/Owners Manuals, Refer to the Operation and Maiatenance/Owners Manual for istration and {urther information to accomplish each maintenance operation 4 Information Section ‘Maintenance Management Maintenance Management ‘This publication contains maintenance management information, The maintenance items are organized for ‘managing an effective preventive maintenance program. The implementation of a well-managed lubrication and maintenance program should help [produce the following resutts: © Minimized downtime ‘Reduced engine operating costs ‘Increased engine life Caterpillar has determined that itis almost always more expensive to let a component or engine fail than to repair it befove failure. This especially ttue even when repairs before failure are performed at the recommended conservative intervals. There are several zeasons for tis '* Cost of the repair or replacement of failed item, versus minimal rebuild cost iit has not failed ‘* Cost of related damage, caused by the faire ‘© Cost of additional labor to repair the failure and the related damage, and to clean up the engine ‘* Cost of (unscheduled) downtime and lost productivity while the repair is done + Cast of additional worn or damaged parts that ‘would have otherwise been reusable Hf excessive wear is identified at the recommended interval, contact your Caterpillar dealer. The dealer will review your maintenance practices and operating ‘conditions to help you to establish before failure repair intervals, fo meet your specific operating situation ‘Also, if your wear is minimal al the recommended inspection/maintenance interval, your dealer can advise you whether longer intervals are recommended. 5 Information Section Customized Maintenance Management Program Customized Maintenance Management Program Your authorized Caterpilar dealer can assist you in tailoring tne mairteniance management schedules 10 meet the needs of your operating environment and economic goals through a Customized Maintenance ‘Management (CMM) Program consisting of the following items| Maintenance Scheduling Let your Caterpillar dealer schedule your maintenancs, ‘component repairs, and overhauls using their computer. A good scheduling program helps ensure that service is performed at the recommended intervals Which helps minimize unexpected downtime and keeps ‘your operation cunning smoothly Flat-Rated Repairs ‘The cost of most scheduled maintenance and repairs can be predetermined, allowing you to accurately budget for these expenses. (When an engine is run to failure, these “lat rate” or “irr” prices are subject to ‘additional charges for failed parts, cleaning, machining, etc) Repair Options ‘Your Caterpiiar dealer can offer you several choices for most maintenance and repair needs, including the following items: * Genuine Caterpilar Replacement Components * Caterpillar Remanufactured Components + Caterpilar Dealer Exchange Components ‘* Caterpillar Dealer Rebuild Using Genuine Caterpillar Pans You may be pleasantly surprised at your dealer's prides for these options, compared to your own total Costs to do the repairs yourselt \.et your Caterpilar dealer show you the savings that can be realized by following a Customized Maintenance Management Program. Engine Invesiment Analysis (EIA) Program. Your Caterpilar dealer bas all the elements of a complete maintenance management program that can help you reduce engine operating costs and realize ful value from your invesiment. 6 information Section Scheduled Oil Sampling (S+O+S) Scheduled Oil Sampling (S-O+S) Caterpilar’s Scheduled Oil Sampling (S*O+8) Program is a series of diagnostic tests designed ta identity and ‘measure contamination and congition of oi in an engine's crankcase. $+Q+S incorporates three basic tests: WEAR ANALYSIS which identities and measures the amount of wear particles in the ol, These wear particles are then compared agains! established Caterpillar norms to determine acoeptabilty CHEMICAL and PHYSICAL TESTS which detect the presence of water, fuel and antifreeze in the oll If these tems are found, their concentrations are compared ‘against Caterpillar established maximum limits. OIL CONDITION ANALYSIS which identifies and measures the amount of contaminants such as soot, sulfur, oxidation and nitration products. This fest can also be used to customize (reduce, extend or maintain) ‘ll change intervals. /O+S Program is a good indicator to identify what is taking place inside the engine structure. An easly warning of unacceptable oil contamination can save considerable expense in engine repairs. To be effective as an indicator, S+O+S must be performed on 2 continuing basis, Intermittent sampling will not allow wear rale trend lines to be established for a particutar engine, which makes identifying the best time to ‘overhaul an engine virtually impossible. Consult your Caterpiiar dealer for compiete information and assistance in establishing an S*OeS Program for your engine 7 Information Section Maintenance Management Schedule Terminology Maintenance Management Schedule Terminology ‘Check - To observe for satisfactory conditions, accuracy, Safety and pertarmance Inspect ~ To examine closely in critical appraisal while testing or evaluating components or systems.
