    BecauseoftheintroductionofmorerigorousstatestandardsthroughtheadoptionoftheMNELACommon
    CoreStandardsin2010,districtsacrossthenationwerefacedwiththechallengeofeitherupdatingtheir
    coreinstructionalresourcesorsupplementingthemtoaddressthenewexpectations.Ourcoreresource,
    GoodHabits,GreatReaders(GHGR)isgroundedinresearch.However
    ,
    becauseitwasselectedbefore
    thechangestothestatestandardsin2010,itdoesnotaddressthefullscopeofthenewstandards.

    Wearegratefulfortheworkmanyteachershavedonetosupplementthecoreresourcetoensurethat
    studentsareachievinggradelevelstandards.Wealsorecognizethattheexpectationsestablishedthrough
    theFoundationalReadingandWritingStandardsinkindergartenthroughsecondgradearesignificant.Asa
    keyoffocusoftheAcceleration2020StrategicPlan,wedeterminedthiswasacriticalareatoprovide
    additionalcurricularsupporttoensurestudentsdevelopstrongskillsasbeginningreaders.

    Afterarigorousandthoroughmaterialreviewprocessinvolvingrepresentativesfromnearlyallsites,we
    haveselected
    ReadingHorizonsasourfoundationalskillsmaterialadoptionforimplementation
    startinginthefallof2015
    .ReadingHorizonsmeetsourneeds,alignswiththeMNELAstandards,and
    containsbothtraditionalkitmaterialsandablendedtechnologycomponent.Tosupportsuccessful
    implementationinthefall,literacyspecialistswillbeconductingatrialwiththematerialsthisspring.Theywill
    alsohavematerialsavailableforteacherswhowanttopreviewtheprogram.Additionally,materialswillbe
    availabletopreviewduringlunchatupcomingprincipalmeetingsandwillbeavailableforteacherpreviewin
    theTeachingandLearningDepartment.

    Weareinthefinalstagesofsettingupprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforteachers.Initial,
    mandatory
    trainingsessionsforallK2classroomteacherswillbescheduledinAugust(finaldateswillbe
    announcedinthenextfewweeks).Bothoncontractandoffcontractdateswillbescheduled.Teachers
    willbepaidforattendanceonnoncontractdays.Additionally,wearedeterminingmaterialallocationand
    deliveryprocesses,creatingcommunicationopportunitiesforallstakeholders,andcollaboratingwithother
    departmentstoensureaseamlessandsupportedimplementation.
