Activity: Social Skittles
Source: Stumbo, N. (1999). Social Skittles. In Intervention Activities for At-Risk Youth (pp. 333334). State College, Pennsylvania: Venture Publishing.
Equipment needed: Skittles, construction paper, black marker, small plastic bags
Activity Description:
1. This done in a small group.
2. Everyone in the group gathers into a circle while the instructor passes out 1 bag of
Skittles to each person.
3. The instructor can start the activity by taking out 3 Skittles from the bag and depending
on what color they pull out, they must share the following information:
- Green: Something nice about the person to the left.
- Yellow: Something you like about yourself.
- Purple: Favorite thing to do with friends.
- Orange: Something that you would like to become better at.
- Red: Something nice about the person to the right.
4. Afterwards, the group can start sharing based on the Skittles they pull out.
5. When everyone has presented, everyone can eat the rest of their Skittles.
Leadership Considerations:
1. The instructor should facilitate positive remarks about each other.
2. If conducting the activity with a group of people with visual impairments, the colors can
be described by their flavors instead. The participant will first eat the skittle, and after
determining what flavor it is, they can answer the questions accordingly. The questions
can be changed accordingly. For example, what is your favorite song? and Who is
your favorite singer? can be used.
3. This can be used as an icebreaker.
